JOB SUMMARY

The Royal Navy is responsible for safeguarding the United Kingdom’s national security at sea, protecting global trade routes, and projecting power worldwide. The People and Training Directorate (P&T) is responsible for attracting, training, and retaining inspired and capable people in an agile and flexible Whole Force environment to enable the Royal Navy to succeed on operations by putting our people capability first.
Based in Navy Command Headquarters (NCHQ) in Whale Island, Portsmouth, the People Intelligence, Insights & Analytics Centre (PIIAC) is P&T’s centre of expertise in all things people data. Capable of analysing and exploiting information, data and knowledge on the workforce and their behaviours, PIIAC enables timely and informed decision making to reassure and protect the workforce; and helps inform the development of best-practice policies and training. The PIIAC also develops and maintains reports and applications to enable self-service and ad-hoc reporting to all levels of seniority from individual localised projects up to central Government.
The analysis and insights you generate at PIIAC can help positively influence and effect the working environments of the thousands of sailors who make up the Royal Navy.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

JOB DESCRIPTION

You will be transforming data into information that can be utilized to make business decisions and actions. The work involves acquiring data from multiple sources, creating reports on a regular basis, correcting any code issues, and ensuring that databases remain error-free and organized. You will perform a range of activities from simple analysis in Microsoft Excel through to designing, building and implementing bespoke analytics architecture in the RNs Oracle based People analytics system. As well as other analytics software utilised within the Organisation and requires the jobholder to be organized, have strong mathematical abilities and work well as part of a team. The Data Analyst is responsible for presenting large amounts of information in ways that are universally understandable and easy to interpret and digest for the end user. Specifically, they should be able to:

  • Manipulate, analyse and interpret complex data sets relating to the Organisation.
  • Mine and analyse large datasets, draw valid inferences and present them successfully to management using reporting tools.
  • Prepare reports for internal and external audiences using business analytics reporting tools.
  • Create data dashboards, graphs and visualisations.
  • Make large and/or complex data more accessible, understandable and usable through visual medium.
  • Leverage PIIAC capabilities, provide insights and recommendations to improve Organisational operations and decision making.
  • Gather and collate contextual knowledge required in order to develop data narratives.
  • Oversee and coordinate projects between the PIIAC and the RN e.g. strategic projects that require or impact PIIAC capability.
  • Collaborate with relevant functions, teams and special projects.
  • Negotiate and inform customers with regards to changes in services and corresponding impact.
