Summary of Position:
The Lewis Katz School of Medicine is seeking an accomplished and dynamic physician leader to serve as the Section Chief of Nephrology/Medical Director Kidney Transplant Program within the Department of Medicine. This leadership role will involve fostering a collaborative, innovative, and academically rigorous environment, with a strong emphasis on clinical excellence, research, and education. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with medical professionals, health system leadership , and clinical research teams to enhance patient care and clinical outcomes. It is preferred that the new Chief has experience in medical nephrology and transplant medicine.
The individual in this position will lead a team of nephrologists, collaborate with other medical and administrative departments, and ensure the highest standards of patient care, education, and scholarly work in the field of nephrology. The Section Chief will provide clinical guidance, mentorship to faculty, fellows, and residents, and foster an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement. This role requires strong leadership, expertise in nephrology and kidney transplant, and the ability to engage with academic, clinical, and research communities effectively.

EDUCATION

The Chief/Medical Director is tasked with driving the achievement of quality and educational objectives, actively participating in faculty development, and mentoring medical students and post-graduate trainees. The Section Chief of Nephrology will:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires an M.D., D.O., or foreign equivalent. ACGME Board Certification: Board-certified in Nephrology and Internal Medicine; subspecialty certification in Transplant Nephrology preferred. Fellowship Training: Completion of an ACGME accredited transplant nephrology fellowship.
Clinical experience in kidney transplantation; prior transplant program leadership is preferred.
Qualified candidates must possess credentials for an academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor in the medical school and have an outstanding clinical care, research, scholarship, and mentoring/education record. Candidates should be active participants in specialty organizations/committees at regional and national levels and obtain a medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Responsibilities

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the Section of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant in Temple’s tripartite mission of cutting-edge clinical care, education, and research.
  • Ensure a world-class educational experience and mentorship to medical students, residents, and fellows in Nephrology.
  • Promote a strong culture of institutional responsibility, including a commitment to excellent, efficient, and effective business operations and the use of space.
  • Encourage and support diversity among the Section’s constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, and acceptance.
  • Promote a culture of engagement, mission, lifelong learning, and professional development among departmental staff.
  • Work with the Department Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, Department Chair, and Senior Associate Dean, Office of Faculty Affairs, to define plans for the development of each faculty member and perform annual review meetings with each Nephrology faculty member.
  • Support the promotion of faculty during the promotion process through mentorship, guidance, and advocacy.
  • Participate in departmental, School of Medicine, and hospital committees assigned by the Department Chair, TFPP, CEO, TUH, CEO and/or Dean of LKSOM
  • Ensure patient-focused, efficient, effective, and safe clinical care.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care, safety, and outcomes.
  • Develop programs that reduce barriers to care amongst the patients served by Temple Health.
  • Manage the resources of the Section to ensure sustainable and effective programs.
  • Promote community outreach, community feedback, and collaboration with community-based organizations.
  • Ensure compliance with all clinical standards, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in nephrology and integrate emerging practices into clinical care and departmental policies.
