III. JOB KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • Associate’s Degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology or at least 5 years’ experience in a hands-on telecommunications related field is required.

Must have a working knowledge of or promptly acquire proficiency in:

  • Telephone Switching-Softswitch and Legacy.
  • Power systems (AC and DC) and their operations.
  • Digital Data and Analog Data Communications.
  • Ethernet Technologies.
  • TCP/IP Networking.
  • Fiber Concentrators and DSLAMs.
  • Fiber ONTs/NIDs.
  • T1 and Special Service Equipment installation and maintenance.
  • IPTV Equipment and Services.
  • Internet Services.
  • LAN/WAN equipment.
  • ATM and SONET technologies.
  • SS7 and STP technology.

Requires proficiency in PC literacy and software including: spreadsheets, word processors, packet capture and analysis tools, and other computer applications as required by the job.
Proficiency, or the ability to become proficient, in operating systems including Linux/UNIX, Microsoft Windows, etc.

V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical ability to perform tasks assigned with regard to mechanical work (handle and climb ladders, work from ladders, handle heavy equipment, etc.).
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting, up to 100 pounds, is often required.

Responsibilities

I. PURPOSE OF POSITION

This is a full-time Bargaining Unit position responsible for the system-wide installation, testing, and maintenance of all Central Office/Network Operations equipment. Equipment types primarily include DSLAMs, Ethernet concentrators, fiber-optic devices, softswitches, TDM switches, routers, associated digital TV devices, SONET devices, and T1 devices. Within these guidelines, the successful candidate will isolate and resolve Network Operations troubles and report results to the Network Operations Manager. Interdepartmental relationships are required for trouble resolution with all departments including Installation and Repair, Engineering, Business Development, and Support/Customer Service. The technician will maintain stock of spare equipment and will maintain backups and detailed plans and diagrams for all Network Services equipment. Other purposes include installation and analysis of diagnostic software/hardware to maintain or troubleshoot and repair network-related issues.

II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Installation, repair, maintenance, and upgrade of Network Operations equipment. This includes DSLAMs, SONET nodes, ATM and IP devices, IPTV devices, Multiplexers, Fiber Concentrators, and other equipment which services RiverStreet area.
  • Maintenance and upgrades to telephone devices, including legacy switches and softswitches.
  • Maintenance and upgrades of interoffice and intercompany fiber, Ethernet, and transmission equipment.
  • Installation and maintenance of power equipment including batteries, rectifiers, inverters, fuse panels, and power boards.
  • Provisioning of equipment in regard to maximizing up-time while providing redundancy when possible.
  • Installation and maintenance of broadband circuits used during build-out and deployment of Wilkes’ network.
  • Installation and maintenance of equipment unfamiliar to the technician while working in tandem with vendors to complete installs, gaining knowledge and insight to the product and services.
  • Required to use PCs or computer-assisted devices after normal working hours for routine and emergency procedures.
  • Maintenance of accurate records of network-related equipment and services.
  • Assist with annual inventory of network-related equipment.
  • Attend workshops, seminars, and training as requested by Director of Network Operations.
  • Coordinate with other personnel for testing and maintenance – request assistance as needed.
