Summary:
The primary responsibility of the Network Operations Engineer is to provide Network Engineer support to the Network Operations team to ensure the successful and reliable operation of GVTC’s network. This position provides top-level support for Network Operations core competencies including but not limited to surveillance, maintenance, troubleshooting, provisioning, backups, upgrades, SLAs, documentation, incident management, and change management. Requirements of the job include 24x7 availability to assist the Network Operations team with resolving network outages and supporting SLAs for applicable customers. Additional responsibilities include frequent interactions with Network Engineering to test and implement new features and systems in support of GVTC’s future growth opportunities. Also provides training for the Network Operations Center and other departments when applicable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interacts with Network Engineering personnel on a regular basis to implement and maintain new and existing network infrastructure and keep a working knowledge of those operations
  • Works closely with Network Engineering and Product Management to test and implement new features in support of GVTC’s future growth opportunities
  • Acts as a liaison between the Network Operations and Network Engineering departments while assisting Network Engineering with key projects and initiatives
  • Directs field activities for dispatched Central Office technicians as they assist Network Operations and/or Network Engineering
  • Functions as a top-level escalation point for the Network Operations Center to handle customer issues and network outages when needed
  • Plans and performs approved software/firmware upgrades to all network platforms including Accedian NIDs, Calix B6, Calix E7, Calix E9, Cisco routers and switches, Juniper routers and switches
  • Maintains software revisions of all deployed Calix CPE and assists Network Engineering with new CPE testing and evaluation
  • Assists with the deployment and maintenance of on-net and off-net Carrier Cellular Backhaul and Wholesale Ethernet services
  • Supports voice services including Metaswitch and cloud-based telephony migration
  • Supports video head-end functions including IPTV and efforts to transition away from RF video
  • Perform regular network backups of all systems and be able to restore from backup if required in an outage situation
  • Proactively identify issues in the network and work to resolve before any customer impact is experienced
  • Evaluate any security threats to the network and pursue improvements in support of GVTC’s security posture
  • Create and update documentation critical to the operation of the network
  • Deliver SLA and other network performance reporting as scheduled and ad-hoc
  • Seek out process improvements and pursue enhancements accordingly
  • Adheres to established Change Management processes and procedures
  • Advanced to expert level knowledge on GVTC networks including:

Technical Skills / Certifications: Minimum (7) years’ experience in a Network Operations and/or Network Engineering environment required. Must possess advanced to expert level knowledge/experience of core competencies and GVTC network types/elements listed above. Additional experience above the minimum requirement is preferred. Experience with evaluating and deploying new systems and products is strongly desired.
