Description

The Network Systems Engineer will support monitoring, tool integration, customer support, vendor coordination, and problem resolution in the OARnet Network Security Operations Center (NSOC). The NSOC provides operational security functions to support OARnet, which maintains and delivers services across the state’s 5,500-mile fiber-optic network backbone to support the connectivity relied upon every day by Ohio’s higher education, K-12 education, state and local government, public broadcasting, health care, and research communities.
The ideal candidate will work independently as well as part of a team, have excellent communication skills, and be a motivated self-starter. The position will be integrated into the OARnet 24x7 Network Operations Center. The candidate must be able to function in a 24x7 production environment and effectively interface with team members, customers, vendors, and partners.
This position will develop, maintain, and support systems and vendor integrations using commercial, open source, and locally developed software and provide direct support to OARnet customers for network security related events.

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Perform network traffic analysis.
  • Perform network scanning using open source and commercial tools including Tenable.
  • Develop and support integrations to third-party network security services including Black Lotus Labs.
  • Integrate reports and tools with ServiceNow and Splunk.
  • Provide real-time incident support for DDoS and other disruptive network events.
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation to customers.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation.
  • Provide operational support to internal staff.
  • Implement data visualizations, dashboards, usage summaries, and other reporting.

This position, which offers a flexible schedule, will be placed in an on-call rotation for off-hours and weekend support. OARnet fosters an environment of continuing education and training, which is an expectation of the role and will be supported by the organization.
OARnet, along with the Ohio Supercomputer Center and OhioLINK, is part of the Ohio Technology Consortium (OH-TECH), the technology and information division of the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE). OH-TECH provides high-tech solutions for Ohio’s higher education institutions to catalyze innovation in the modern knowledge economy. OH-TECH is a welcoming and supportive work environment.
Because The Ohio State University serves as OH-TECH’s fiscal and legal agent, OH-TECH staff enjoy the same benefits as other Ohio State employees, including participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), the Ohio State Health Plan, employee wellness and work-life balance programs, educational benefits, discount programs, and more.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related systems area.
