About the Allwyn UK Communications Team The Allwyn UK Communications team’s mission is two-fold, to promote and protect the reputation of Allwyn UK as the custodian of The National Lottery, and to create excitement and a positive landscape for The National Lottery to flourish. A bit about the role Reporting to the Head of Corporate Communications, the Newsroom Editor will oversee our always-on news operations. With a primary focus on identifying and harnessing both external news and internal business moments that support the reputation and transformation of The National Lottery, you will lead a media relations team to make The National Lottery relevant and exciting for modern Britain through compelling storytelling across all platforms. Partnering with colleagues across the Communications function you will source and identify the stories that help us to reimagine how The National Lottery shows up in contemporary culture, as well as identifying the primary channels to maximise impact. You’ll also help protect our brands, by being the eyes and ears on who is talking about Allwyn UK and The National Lottery externally, what news is trending and being quick to respond where we should have a clear voice. What you’ll be doing As the Newsroom Editor, you will: Manage a small team of media relations specialists to proactively and reactively promote and protect the Allwyn UK and The National Lottery brands; helping to make Allwyn UK and The National Lottery relevant and a prominent, positive voice in key cultural conversations Be the eyes and ears on who is talking about Allwyn UK and The National Lottery externally, what they are saying and counsel on whether we need to respond – whilst being quick to respond where we should have a clear voice Drive innovation in The National Lottery storytelling – from winner reveals to draw nights Share our appetite for getting ahead of news and great visual storytelling – spot what’s trending and relevant and respond to opportunities with speed and agility Identify – and act on – news opportunities based on strategic priorities, everyday activity and opportunities to build the Allwyn UK and The National Lottery brand – ensuring our Social Value is a red thread through everything talk about Be quick to move – by being on top of the UK’s daily news agenda and seeking out opportunities to quickly respond to relevant news with stories, stats and spokespeople Grow and maintain relationships with relevant media and journalists; helping to maximise positive and balanced news coverage about Allwyn UK and The National Lottery Take an enthusiastic multiplatform, digital-first approach to sharing and commenting on Allwyn UK and The National Lottery news – including owning our Broadcast channels such as the creation of podcasts Work with our communications and PR managers, and other stakeholders, to source, create (written or broadcast) and edit brilliant news stories that reflect our brand – helping to transform lottery moments into compelling content that resonates across all channels Work across the Communications team and with relevant stakeholders to make sure every update your team put out has been vetted and is publishable; and align on how to repurpose how this content travels across different channels Come with a great contact book and maintain and grow those relationships Stay up to date on journalist moves and industry trends Keep up to date on emerging news platforms and counsel if/how we best engage them Develop news, media and visual storytelling capabilities within the Communications team Work in partnership with our communications agency partner as required What experience we’re looking for Established, relevant job experience, ideally as a journalist or news editor – with a track record in making stories newsworthy and engaging Strong understanding of modern media consumption, i.e. how people consume news Strong grasp of UK gaming and entertainment industry and culture A passion for, and genuine interest in, the news agenda, and a curiosity and passion for how it travels across various paid, earned, shared and owned channels A hunger for finding and sharing great stories A collaborator with first-class communication skills, both written and verbal, able to proactively work with other stakeholders to source and share stories The ability to influence senior stakeholders and be the expert in the room The ability to work under pressure Be a brilliant writer and an even better editor – a great content creator and storyteller Experience with real rime analytics and measurement People management experience Speed and agility Energy and enthusiasm Media training coaching experience would be beneficial Key Measures of Success: Increase in positive proactive news coverage that helps build trust in the Allwyn UK and The National Lottery brands An effective multi-platform, social-first, audience-first approach to news with evidence of stories travelling across multiple channels An increase in sourcing and sharing great stories that support our strategic priorities Evidence in upskilling the wider Communications team with visual storytelling, digital media and broadcast capabilities About us At Allwyn, we are dedicated to changing lives and growing the National Lottery responsibly, championing its positive impact on people, places, and the planet.
