Our mission is to protect the integrity of New Mexico’s livestock industry. Our team of about sixty full-time inspectors and another sixty full and part time deputies continuously patrol and perform inspections around our state to help keep our livestock free from disease and safe from theft. We are also the office of the State Veterinarian, whose team collaborates with various government and private sector partners to ensure that our state remains free of diseases.
This position will be based out of the Southeast area of the state.
This position requires NM Law Enforcement Certification
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for directing the resources and activities in Area 1 to ensure the delivery of services to the producers in this area. This position requires current Law Enforcement Certification.
How does it get done?
Manage Area 1 resources to include staff, budget and equipment.
Oversee and act as lead Law Enforcement Officer for Area 1 by guiding complex high profile cases, emergency responses, investigations and compliance issues. Ensure officers are trained and in compliance with all NM Law Enforcement requirements. Oversee and act as lead Inspector by monitoring inspections and ensuring inspectors are trained and in compliance with board rules. Act as liaison to ensure agency directives are communicated, completed and complied with. Develop objectives and plans for Area 1 to ensure the effective delivery of services. This includes educating interested parties and groups and facilitating discussions on improving the delivery of services.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, criminology, biology, livestock science/management, animal science, range science/management, agricultural science, environmental science, resource economics, ecology, natural resource management, zoology, or other closely related natural resources degree field; and ten (10) years of law enforcement experience, seven (7) years must be supervisory; and eight (8) years of experience in livestock industry. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twenty-two (22) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be a certified NM peace officer.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Pre-Employment drug testing.
Working Conditions
Extensive driving, computer and cell phone use. Frequent travel throughout the area and occasionally statewide.
Law enforcement activities include road stops, issuing citations, investigations and providing back up to local law enforcement agencies when needed.
Exposure to livestock, extreme temperatures, noise, vibrations, dust, odors and poor ventilation.
