We are a non-profit youth woodworking program teaching valuable vocational, entrepreneurial and life skills to disadvantaged youth and young adults. We offer a safe alternative to the streets and a positive, nurturing environment in which to learn. Our goal is that every student we serve will stay in school, stay out of trouble, and transition successfully into either the workforce or college. We serve 1,000+ young people annually through our core programs: After-School Entrepreneurial Woodworking, Apprenticeship Program, Outreach Program, and Skilled Trades Program.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Finance Manager plays a crucial leadership role in ensuring Kids Making It’s financial health and sustainability. Kids Making It has significantly grown in recent years and our need for a bookkeeper/accountant has evolved to our current need for a Finance Manager. This is a new position and will be responsible for all aspects of KMI’s finances, from day-to-day operations to strategic financial planning. The Finance Manager works closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership team to maintain strong financial oversight, ensure grant compliance, and proactively address financial needs and opportunities. This role may also take on ad-hoc projects as assigned. The current need for this position is for 25 hours/week. Long-term we anticipate the position requiring more hours/week, up to and including full-time at 40 hours/week.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field
  • 2+ years of non-profit financial management experience
  • Experience with grant financial management and compliance
  • Excited to manage our unique financial needs as a nonprofit with multiple retail revenue streams
  • Thrives on creating and maintaining efficient systems for a growing nonprofit while being energized (not stressed) by the challenge of unexpected situations
  • Proactive and strategic thinker with strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication abilities
  • Proficiency with Quickbooks and Excel
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with federal and state grant compliance
  • Knowledge of youth development or educational organizations
  • Experience working with grant management software
Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with KMI’s mission and growth objectives
  • Provide strategic financial guidance to the Executive Director and for the Board of Directors
  • Lead annual budgeting process and ongoing budget management
  • Identify and analyze financial risks and opportunities
  • Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee all accounting operations, ensuring accuracy and compliance
  • Manage cash flow and financial forecasting
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
  • Develop and maintain internal controls
  • Manage relationships with external financial partners (banks, auditors, etc.)
  • Process and manage payroll
  • Manage benefits administration and new hire onboarding in collaboration with Operations Manager
  • Collaborate with Operations Manager to prepare and distribute monthly student checks
  • Reconcile monthly credit card transactions and monitor credit card payments and balances
  • Maintain and manage all bank, loan, and investment account information
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable

Grant Financial Management

  • Lead financial compliance efforts for all grants
  • Develop and monitor grant budgets
  • Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of grant expenditures
  • Prepare financial reports for grant applications and reporting
  • Collaborate with program staff to maximize grant impact while maintaining compliance

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations and file any necessary annual renewals
  • Oversee annual audit process
  • Manage tax preparation and filing (Form 990, state returns, etc.)
  • Process monthly state sales tax reimbursements
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate insurance coverage
  • Identify and address potential financial risks

Team Leadership

  • Collaborate with Operations Manager on financial processes
  • Provide financial training and support to program managers
  • Foster a culture of financial responsibility across the organization
