NON-STERILE COMPOUNDING TECHNICIAN

Smith’s Pharmacy & Smith Labs is a state-of-the-art compounding pharmacy in Toronto, Ontario established over 80 years ago. We specialize in preparation of customized formulations, such as sterile infusions, bio-identical hormones, pain management formulas, cosmeceutical preparation, and pediatric preparations. Smith’s Pharmacy is positioned to deliver customized compounds that will address unmet medical needs where no commercial product is otherwise available. The compounded pharmaceutical and nutraceutical preparations that Smith’s Pharmacy will deliver is based on the orders from healthcare practitioners and health institutions in which individual ingredients, pharmaceuticals, supplements, minerals, vitamins are mixed and customized together in the exact strength and dosage form requested. This method allows the Smith’s Pharmacy compounding pharmacists and pharmacy professionals to work with the healthcare professionals, hospitals, pharmacies, and practitioners to customize dosage forms to meet the patient’s specific needs.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Maintains knowledge of and adhere to NAPRA’s Model Standards of Practice for Non-Sterile Compounding of Non-Hazardous and Hazardous products
  • Pulling/putting away manufactured medications and chemicals
  • Counting/pouring/mixing/weighing/affixing labels/taping
  • Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as according to current SOPs and hazardous drug control plan (HDCP)
  • Accurately perform and verify complex calculations related to prescription formulations
  • Performs compounding medication checks to ensure accurate components
  • Performs medication compounding while ensuring correct components, weight, labelling and refers to a pharmacist if required
  • Recognize when a patient or prescription order requires the assessment of a Pharmacist and ensures referral of the patient or prescription order to the pharmacist
  • Proper operation and maintenance of all compounding equipment (mortar and pestles (manual and electronic), capsule machine, ointment mill, and biosafety (class 1) cabinets
  • Maintenance of logs: freezer, balance calibrations, sterile hood, humidity, filter logs, environmental monitoring logs, and temperature logs
  • Glassware and equipment washing and proper waste removal (reduces fine particulate exposure) according to current SOPs and HDCP

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous Non-Sterile Compounding Experience Required
  • Very strong attention to detail, with ability to work in a fast-paced, zero-defect environment
  • Demonstrated ability to be accountable for work produced and action taken is required
  • Effective organizational skills, ability to multi task
  • Proficient with current PC systems, MS Office programs and pharmacy software (Nexus).
  • Interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships and positive work environment.
  • Language skills to communicate clearly and listen carefully in a respectful manner.
  • Receptive to constructive feedback for continuous improvement
  • Flexible schedule- able to work 1-2 weekends per month
    Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
