Position Title: Northern Stars Leader
Position Type: Casual/Part-Time
Hours of Work: 37.5 hrs/week max.
Pay: $30/hr
Location: Yellowknife, NT
Reports to: Northern Stars Program Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY

The FFC Northern Stars after-school program aims to provide a fun, educational, and therapeutic program for children in care during the school year. This program runs Monday-Friday, with varied start/end time from 8:15pm-5:30pm. Excluding weekends, and statutory holidays. Working hours will be from 8:15pm (if applicable) until 5:30pm to ensure all daily tasks are completed. The after-school program will run out of the FFCNWT office building, with outings within the community and time spent outdoors.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be extremely punctual and reliable.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience working with children and youth with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, a trauma background, and various behavioral needs.
  • Enthusiasm and desire to work with children and youth and make a positive impact on their life.
  • Knowledge of northern First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures
  • Requires a Vulnerable Sector Check (within last 6 months)

Responsibilities

LEADER ROLE:

The Northern Stars Leader will be working Monday-Friday from 8:15am-5:30pm. PD days/STIP days the program converts into a full day camp. Working hours will be between 8:30am-5:30pm. Lunch breaks will be given accordingly. Under the direction and supervision of the Northern Stars Program Coordinator. Northern Star’s Leaders will assist in planning, organizing, and implementing daily programming. The programming is designed to promote life skills that empower and motivate children and youth through on the land activities, team building games, as well as arts and crafts activities.

DUTIES

  • Follow the daily programming set by the Program Coordinator.
  • Remind all kids to wash hands regularly throughout the day.
  • Engage with children at all times; be open, communicative, and supportive. No phones while working.
  • Ensure children are supervised at all times.
  • Lead activities with enthusiasm and energy.
  • Respect all equipment and facilities, and ensure proper care, use, and maintenance of them.
  • Prepare/set-up/supervise games and activities.
  • Strong communication with the Program Coordinator, occasionally foster parents/caregivers.
  • Ensure all spaces are cleaned and sanitized at the end of each day.
  • Read through the Handbook to follow other rules and regulations.
  • Meet with the Program Coordinator on a regular basis.
