POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the general direction of the Provincial Program Director, Critical Care, Emergency and Trauma the incumbent is functions as a nursing staff consultant responsible for:

  • Orientation and ongoing education of staff to maintain and improve nursing practice in relation to established standards of care within the critical care units.
  • Initial certification and renewal/recertification of nursing staff in the Critical Care Units and relief teams who deliver CRRT therapy.
  • Precepting staff while CRRT therapy is in progress.
  • Troubleshooting the existing CRRT circuits.
  • Participating in the development of CRRT hospital related policies, procedures, guidelines and practice tools (order sets, SOPs).
  • Education of Support staff including Unit Assistants, Nurses Aides and Unit Clerks to enable CRRT delivery including but not limited to equipment maintenance, CRRT supplies, and CRRT order sets and forms.
  • Patient and family education resource review and development.

The incumbent acts as a nursing staff educator; and orientates and teaches nursing staff to maintain and improve nursing practice in relation to established standards of care within the critical care units.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 3 years current critical care experience required.
  • Experience in CRRT required, 2 years preferred.
  • Previous teaching experience preferred.

EDUCATION (DEGREE/DIPLOMA/CERTIFICATE)

  • Graduate from an approved School of Nursing required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Adult education certification preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve in complex situations.
  • Evidence of knowledge of the principles of adult learning and teaching strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to function creatively and independently.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.
  • Initiates and supports change.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • May be required to work safely in a typical computerized office environment with frequent meetings.
  • Moderate to heavy physical effort required.
  • Travel between provincial ICU sites where CRRT is performed will be required.May be required to travel throughout the service area requiring a valid Manitoba driver’s license and use of a personal motor vehicle.
