POSITION OVERVIEW

The Child Protection Centre is a multidisciplinary assessment program dedicated to protecting children from maltreatment through the provision of expert assessments to determine the existence or risk of (re)occurrence of abuse or neglect. The Centre provides hospital based acute medical and psychosocial opinions on a consultation basis as well as regular outpatient clinics focusing upon sexual and physical abuse. The Centre also provides consultative and diagnostic services for children and their families where children may be experiencing developmental delays and psychosocial difficulties as a result of abuse or neglect. The Centre also promotes child wellbeing and the protection of children from maltreatment through advocacy, research, and education.
Under the general direction of the Manager, Health Services, the incumbent functions as a pivotal member of the multidisciplinary team to coordinate and provide clinical management to patients with complex health issues within the defined patient population and acts as a resource person to other healthcare professionals and to the community. The Nurse Clinician utilizes advanced skills and knowledge and performs at a high level of independence as a clinical practitioner, leader, consultant and educator. Practices are in accordance with employer policy and professional standards. The Nurse Clinician supports families in Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, Nunavut and Saskatchewan as required.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum three years recent clinical experience in relevant nursing specialty required.
  • Experience working with complex pediatric population (newborn to teen) required.

EDUCATION (DEGREE/DIPLOMA/CERTIFICATE)

  • Graduate of an approved Registered Nursing education program required.
  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred.
  • Advanced clinical knowledge of child maltreatment preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Must have comfort assessing and discussing teen gynecological issues.
  • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Proficient with computers, software programs, and applications such as Windows and Word Processing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Commitment to care through a family centered nursing approach.
  • Advanced clinical knowledge in subspecialty.
  • Commitment to maintaining current knowledge in area of expertise through reviewing literature and attending continuing education in-services, workshops and conferences.
  • Expertise and competence in nursing practice, interviewing, counselling, teaching and group dynamics.
  • Ability to work independently but collaboratively with patients, families and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with referring physicians and nurses and community members.
  • Displays initiative, accountability, good time management, decision-making ability, leadership and strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge and skills in research and quality assurance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to function in a high stress environment as a result of frequent exposure to psychosocial stressors.
  • Moderate to heavy physical effort required.
  • May be required to work flexible hours.
  • Occasional travel to community agencies, patient homes and/or other healthcare institutions.
