JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to both the Director, Equitable Learning, Health & Wellness and the Nursing Supervisor, the Nurse provides on-campus health care services for clients in a walk-in health center, and in emergency situations on campus. The incumbent applies professional skills to evaluate and give client care following established standards and practices and coordinates and delivers services to promote and maintain an optimal level of well-being for Mohawk’s student population.
As an integral part of Student Wellness, the Nurse helps support health promotion and all activities related to mitigating health risk on campus, including infectious disease reporting, case and contact management, vaccination, and testing.

Responsibilities

MEDICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides health care services to students in a drop-in health centre or by responding to identified emergency situations on campus.
  • Coordinates and delivers direct client care by obtaining relevant client histories, conducting physical examinations and assessments, providing client education for common health problems, anticipatory guidance, health maintenance and disease management and by providing medical management or other appropriate treatment as authorized through delegated acts and medical directives and identified in the treatment plan.
  • Develops treatment plan including evaluation of care, with physician follow-up and referral to outside medical care as necessary.
  • Collects specimens such as urine, blood, stool, vaginal, urethral secretions, skin scrapings for lab testing; processing, labels with accompanying requisitions and appropriately store and maintain cold chain and other storage requirements as stipulated through health department.
  • Provides TB Tests when required by Public Health and for Non-academic requirements (NARS).
  • Administers drugs or treatments based on policies and procedures and standing orders.
  • Make referrals and provide one-one health teaching and counselling
  • Monitors and reviews lab results for abnormalities and conducts necessary follow-up with patients.
  • Provides program specific immunization as requested by students and organizes flu and other immunization clinics as required in accordance with department initiatives.
  • Provides immunizations for non-program requirements as requested or deemed necessary by RN assessment i.e. tetanus booster; HPV vaccine.
  • Implements and adheres to infection control policies and procedures.
  • Monitors new development and changes in health care as they apply to individuals, the public or professional practice.
  • Monitors and maintains patient flow to physician in collaboration with reception staff and other nurse.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE:

  • RPN Diploma or B.Sc.N. Degree
  • Must be registered through the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in a variety of settings such as public health, acute care, and primary care.
  • Ability to multi-task as well as analyze complex student issues.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize, monitor and assess patient outcomes.
  • Clinical assessment skills.
  • Conflict resolution and problem-solving ability.
  • Provides patient-focused care.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office and database applications.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
