QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Nursing;
  • Three to Five years of relevant experience preferred;
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP) Certificate in Primary Health Care;
  • Current and valid Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in Ontario;
  • 3- 5 years of prior experience in mental health care delivery, both in-person and virtually, preferably within a university or college setting;
  • Certification in crisis intervention and counselling techniques;
  • Proven ability to work effectively on an interprofessional team and collaborate with various stakeholders including faculty, staff, and community partners;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with diverse student populations;
  • Understanding of the unique mental health needs and challenges faced by university students; and
  • Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.
    The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Performs focused health assessment and/or an advanced comprehensive health assessment using assessment tools/techniques based on client needs and stage of life;
  • Performs a complete/focused health history appropriate to the client’s situation, including physical, psychosocial, emotional, ethnic, cultural and spiritual dimensions of health;
  • Performs a complete/focused physical assessment, and interprets normal/abnormal results;
  • Synthesizes health assessment data to diagnose health risks and states of health/illness;
  • Formulates diagnoses through integration of client data and evidence-informed practice;
  • Anticipates and diagnoses emergent, urgent, and life-threatening situations and initiates interventions to stabilize clients;
  • Orders and/or performs screening and diagnostic investigations, interprets results and assumes responsibility for follow-up;
  • Diagnoses diseases/disorders, injuries and conditions, and identifies client’s health needs;
  • Communicates with clients about assessment findings, diagnosis, outcomes and prognosis;
  • Determines care options and therapeutic interventions in collaboration with clients;
  • Supports, educates, counsels clients regarding diagnoses, prognoses and self-management.
  • Prescribes pharmacotherapy based on the client’s health history, disease, disorder, condition and stage of life. Counsels clients on medication therapy, benefits, potential side effects, interactions, compliance and recommended follow-up;
  • Prescribes and/or dispenses drugs in accordance with provincial, territorial and/or federal standards and legislative requirements;
  • Evaluates and revises the plan of care and therapeutic intervention based on current evidence- informed practice and on client goals, preferences, health status and outcomes;
  • Conduct in-depth mental health assessments, diagnosis (use of DSM-5), and treatment planning for university students;
  • Implement a broad range of treatment options from crisis intervention and counselling to pharmaceutical management;
  • Provide individual and group therapy sessions to address a range of mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, stress, and adjustment issues);
  • Offer crisis intervention services, including assessing suicidal risk, providing immediate support, and coordinating appropriate care;
  • Collaborate with psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated and holistic care for students;
  • Participate in outreach programs, workshops, and training sessions to promote mental health awareness and wellness on campus;
  • NP focuses on improving and restoring health. The NP leads or collaborates with other health-care team members, other sectors and/or the community in initiatives that promote health and reduce the risk of complications, illness and injury for their individual clients, client groups and/or the population as a whole;
  • Assesses, identifies and analyzes information to determine client and/or population trends and patterns that have health implications;
  • Initiates or participates in the development of strategies to address identified client and/or population health implications. Collaborates in the development of policy to influence health services and healthy public policy;
  • Initiates or participates in the design of services/interventions for health promotion, health protection, and the prevention of injury, illness, disease and complications;
  • Initiates or participates in the development and implementation of evaluation processes, including identification of indicators for ongoing monitoring of strategies, services and interventions;
  • The NP consults with and/or refers clients to other health-care providers at any point in the care continuum when the client’s condition;
  • Acts as a consultant to and/or refers and accepts referrals from health-care providers, community agencies and allied non-health care professionals;
  • Advocates for clients in relation to therapeutic intervention, health-care access, the health-care system and policy decisions that affect health and quality of life;
  • Collaborates with members of the heath-care team to provide and promote interprofessional client-centered care and guide continuous quality improvement initiatives at the individual, organizational and system levels;
  • Applies advanced knowledge and skills in communication, negotiation, coalition building, change management and conflict resolution, including the ability to analyze, manage and negotiate conflict;
  • Maintain accurate and confidential electronic health records, documenting assessments, interventions, and treatment plans;
  • Document clinical data, assessment findings, diagnoses, plans of care, therapeutic interventions, client responses and clinical rationale in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Adheres to federal and provincial/territorial legislation, policies and standards related to privacy, documentation and information management (this applies to verbal, written or electronic records); and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
