Description Job Title: Nurse Practitioner Job Description Summary The person in this position functions in the Clinic and/or OR setting under the supervision of his/her assigned physician; may perform activities which involve an initial evaluation and treatment of the patient’s condition, as defined in the scope of the State of Illinois standards. Responsibilities Hospital/Surgical Activities Secures patients’ history and physical and records same in medical record Assists surgeon with daily rounds and records such as progress notes Ensures the delivery of required patient x-rays to the operating room prior to operative procedure Assists the surgeon with major and minor surgical procedures in the operating room. Positions, preps and drapes the patient, as needed Closes surgical wounds and performs post-operative wound care, removal of K-wires, etc. Transmits supervising surgeon’s orders and ensures co-signature by surgeon Inserts foley catheters, prn Applies dressings, casts, splint brace, abduction pillows, etc. Participates in on-call activities with assigned physician according to the Medical Center policy on allied health Performs minor surgical procedures within scope of licensure Performs and/or assists with patient traction, adjustment, realignment and removal of traction Dictates H&P’s, consultations and discharge summaries Clinic Activities Performs joint aspirations/injections Interprets x-rays Applies casts, splints, braces, etc. under supervision of the physician Secures histories and physicals. Updates status of patients scheduled for recheck visits. Removes staples, sutures, drains, etc. Sees patients in the clinic both independently and with supervision Dictates clinic progress notes. Orders appropriate tests and develops patient treatment plans with physician approval Other Functions Performs clinical research, presentations, and other academic activities, as needed with physicians Assists in fielding/triaging physician calls Maintain a clean and safe work environment Other duties as assigned Requirements Requirements Education Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner Program Certifications/Licensure Active Licensure as Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner in the State of Illinois ACLS desirable; current CPR required Experience History of exhibited competence, judgment, stability and professional integrity Technical Skills Able to speak/write English language fluently; knowledge of second language helpful but not required Soft Skills Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills Physical Requirements Stand or sit for extended periods of time Occasional exposure to electrical and chemical hazards Requires lifting associated with patient transfers (up to 50 lbs.) Requires the ability to bend and stoop without difficulty Involves exposure to blood-borne pathogens Requires verbal/written communication ability in the English language Involves exposure to weather elements and travel to all associations.
