SUMMARY
The NP functions relatively independently as guided by approved clinical protocols and privileges and functions within the scope of practice for a licensed NP. Ongoing collaboration with physicians, nursing staff, radiology technologists, and other health team members is essential. NP is accountable for all decisions and actions in the care of assigned patients under the direct supervision of assigned physician preceptor. QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) Basic Requirements
NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and an APN (NP) assignment that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.
The following Scope, Education and Experience, and Dimension criteria must be met to qualify for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) II:
Exception to Licensure for Graduate Nurse Technicians. Candidates who otherwise meet the basic requirements, but do not possess the required licensure and/or certification, may be appointed at the entry step of the Nurse II, as a Graduate Nurse Technician - Nurse Practitioner on a temporary appointment up to any period not-to-exceed one year and a day under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 405(c)(2)(B).
The following Scope, Education and Experience, and Dimension criteria must be met to qualify for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) III:
Physical Requirements: : Lifting objects up to 40 pounds, moving specialized equipment and assisting patients from a gurney to a procedure or scan table. Occasionally, the Nurse Practitioner assists with the moving of heavy equipment or large patients, but this is done with the assistance of others to minimize the danger to the individual. Since many of the imaging procedures are performed using equipment that produces ionizing radiation, the incumbent will be required to use a lead apron and other protective equipment. During a procedure, standing for extended periods while wearing a lead apron, is necessary. The incumbent will also work with ultrasound equipment. The incumbent must also work at a computer desk at times.

Foreign Education. Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing who possess a current, full, active and unrestricted registration (see paragraph 3c) will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associate degree level Nursing education program. In order to grant credit towards an appointment based on foreign nursing education higher than the associate degree level, formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized degree equivalency evaluation agency accepted by VA such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD) must be obtained.

DUTIES
Duties include but not limited to: The practice spectrum, in consultation with the physician preceptor is interventional and procedural radiology, including care of patients pre- and post-procedure, management of the interventional radiology consultation service, management of the interventional radiology and radiology procedure schedule, and management of the interventional radiology clinic.
The NP cares for a specific population of patients in a variety of settings. She/he applies specialized clinical nursing knowledge and skills to patient care as well as the improvement of the quality of care provided by others. The NP provides a unique approach to healthcare that allows the incorporation of traditional nursing skills as well as advanced practice skills in the care of patients ranging from young adulthood to geriatrics. These skills enable the NP to anticipate and implement preventive health measures with a strong emphasis on patient/significant other/family education as well as illness management of primary care/specialty care. The NP incorporates patient age, gender culture and learning abilities in the plan of care. The incumbent is assigned to Imaging Service within the VA Loma Linda HCS. The NP III executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care. The NP may function in a variety of roles including patient advocate, consultant, leader, educator, administrator, researcher, and/or clinical care expert. This nurse works effectively with all levels of staff, to include collaborative efforts with other health professionals. The NP collaborates with other disciplines to develop, implement, and coordinate a system of patient care delivery that effects achievement of quality care, patient satisfaction, positive outcomes, appropriate utilization of resources and cost-efficient services. The NP collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, in the inpatient and outpatient settings to identify VA, and community resources
and programs which address inpatient and discharge planning needs for patients. The NP III uses the group process to identify, analyze and resolve care problems. The NP initiates interdisciplinary projects to improve organizational performance and participates in the Performance Improvement Process for related programs. Precepts and mentors students and other nursing staff. The NP Professional Leader will maintain oversight and responsibility for their professional practice issues, including appropriate licensure and certification.
The NP is a registered nurse who has completed the necessary educational preparation in order to: engage in primary health care decision making; obtain advanced competencies and skills for assessing physical and psychosocial health/illness status of individuals, families and groups; promote health maintenance and protection against disease; and, manage the care of patients/clients within the scope of preparation and accountability.
