POSITION SUMMARY

Nurse Practitioner (NP) Addictions: Mental Health Program
Your goal in this position is to provide specialized and advanced nursing care for patients in the Emergency department, and on inpatient units, who have substance use-related health care concerns. You will collaborate with the interprofessional team and the most responsible provider to help patients and their families make informed decisions regarding their specific substance use related issues.
You will perform comprehensive nursing assessments and addictions consultations for patients with a primary or co-occurring substance-related problem. You will practice at full scope for addictions care, offering non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapy, including opioid agonist therapy, anti-craving therapy, and medications to relieve withdrawal symptoms when appropriate. You will help bridge referrals and facilitate discharge from the Emergency Department to the Rapid Access Addictions Medicine (RAAM) clinic at NYGH, or another suitable RAAM clinic. You will assume a leadership role and collaborate with the broader health care team and community partners in managing complex and challenging patient care situations.
In this role you will work in partnership with program leadership and front-line staff to develop, implement and evaluate best practices in addictions care across the organization. You will initiate and participate in professional and organizational activities to advance nursing practice and facilitate improved patient care outcomes.
This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and families.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), within the RN (Extended Class)
  • Completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge and proficiency in current evidence-based mental health and substance use care and practices with an emphasis on health promotion and risk reduction preferred
  • Knowledge of Health Quality Ontario Quality Standards for Substance Use Disorders preferred
  • Clinical experience in hospital or community-based Addictions Programs or working with people with substance use related issues in a hospital or community setting preferred
  • Certification in Hospital and Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners (or equivalent) an asset.
  • Completion of specialized Addictions Courses preferred.
  • Eligibility for cross-appointment with Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto or another academic institution preferred.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations (i.e., NPAO, RNAO) an asset.

EXPERIENCE NECESSARY:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years clinical nursing experience in acute care psychiatry, mental health, medicine, or community addictions.
  • Previous experiences as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class working in acute care an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders preferred.
  • 2 or more years’ experience in delivery of addictions/substance use care preferred
  • Experience with developing and leading quality improvement projects and implementation of evidence-based practices preferred.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Experience working effectively with communities/individuals who face barriers accessing services and experience in approaching work from an equity lens preferred.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of people with mental illness and/or addiction.
  • Excellent clinical skills, sound clinical judgment, initiative, and ability to multitask.
  • Experience in policy development, program planning, and evaluation would be an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently, and collaborate with the interprofessional team.
  • Self-directed and motivated to lead or contribute to the development of an addictions program in an acute care setting.
  • Demonstrates effective mentorship, coaching, and facilitation skills to foster the professional development of others.
  • Incorporates knowledge of teaching and learning principles into daily work.
  • Proficiency in the use of electronic medical records and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Comfortable providing virtual care, as required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to provide services in French and any additional languages is an asset.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of standardized addictions assessment tools is an asset.
  • Demonstrated academic involvement (teaching/research).
