JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse Prescriber will be responsible for assessing and prescribing treatments for patients in accordance with clinical guidelines and best practices. This role involves working within a multi-disciplinary team to provide high-quality patient care, ensuring safe prescribing practices and adherence to NHS and ICB Medicines Optimisation regulations.
Key Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Duties:
  • Conduct patient assessments, taking medical history and performing clinical examinations where required.
  • Treat and prescribe medications in accordance with NICE guidelines and the Nurse Prescriber Formulary.
  • Provide expert advice on medication management and review prescribed treatments to ensure effectiveness and patient safety.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient responses to treatments, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Work closely with GPs, consultants, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Educate and counsel patients on medication adherence, potential side effects, and alternative treatment options.
  1. Prescribing & Medicines Management:
  • Act as the lead prescribing clinician within the organisation, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based prescribing practices.
  • Work with the ICB Medicines Optimisation Team to ensure compliance with prescribing protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date prescribing records in line with CQC and NHS England standards.
  • Identify and report adverse drug reactions, medication errors, and prescribing incidents.
  • Support the implementation of shared care agreements with GPs and primary care providers.
  • Keep up to date with changes in pharmacology, prescribing guidelines, and local/national policies.
  1. Patient Safety & Compliance:
  • Ensure all prescribing is in line with non-medical prescribing regulations and patient group directions (PGDs).
  • Adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct and national prescribing frameworks.
  • Participate in regular audits and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and prescribing practices.
  • Maintain strict adherence to confidentiality, safeguarding, and ethical prescribing standards.
  1. Professional Development & Leadership:
  • Provide training and guidance to junior nurses, healthcare assistants, and other team members on prescribing best practices.
  • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) to maintain prescribing competencies and NMC revalidation requirements.
  • Attend and contribute to clinical meetings, case discussions, and governance reviews.
  • Act as a mentor for nurses undertaking prescribing qualifications or professional development courses.
  • Represent the organisation at local and national forums on prescribing and medicines management.

Person Specification:

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualifications: Registered Nurse with a current NMC registration and an Independent/Supplementary Prescribing qualification (V300).
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in a clinical role with prescribing responsibilities.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of pharmacology, NICE prescribing guidelines, and medicines management.
  • Skills: Excellent prescribing and patient communication skills.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with NHS England prescribing policies, CQC regulations, and ICB governance.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in ADHD, mental health, or long-term condition management.
  • Previous leadership or governance experience in prescribing and medicines optimisation.
  • Additional training in patient group directions (PGDs) and controlled drugs prescribing.
  • Membership in relevant professional bodies such as the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).
