As we look ahead to the next 150, continued collective action will be essential to securing a healthy, climate-resilient future for all. To support this work, we are looking for a Nursery and Reforestation Coordinator to join our California team.    What You’ll Do  As part of the team, you will directly contribute to American Forests’ and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s (CAL FIRE) efforts to address reforestation needs on state and private lands through cone surveying, monitoring, collection and processing. The Coordinator will get hands-on experience in the field of reforestation with guidance from industry experts, building knowledge in cone and seed quality processing and storage, seed sowing, seedling propagation, insect identification, contract administration, safety and inventory practices, and all other tasks related to growing seedlings in the forestry sector. Major responsibilities include:    Nursery Support (60%)  * Stratify and sow seed; cultivate, measure growth, package, and distribute conifer seedlings.  * Process cones and extract, clean, upgrade, test, and prepare seeds for long-term storage.  * Plan, finalize, and implement LA Moran Reforestation Center’s (LAMRC) seedling order contracts; build and maintain relationships with private forest landowners.  * Build and maintain a seedling database for LAMRC’s ongoing orders, overrun, and needs; collaborate with LAMRC’s agency and nonprofit partners to meet statewide seedling needs. * Assist in developing reference resources on nursery processes. Monitoring and Inspection (20%)  * Conduct fieldwork in remote forest areas to survey and monitor viable cone crops on public and private lands to support CAL FIRE seed security, which will include overnights, long working days, and long-distance driving.  Project Administration and Other Duties as Assigned (20%)  * Oversee cone collections, ensuring viable crops are received by the appropriate public seed bank, including all aspects of forestry-related seed bank activities. This position may be asked to support with the preparation of cone collection contracts. * Support in managing programmatic budgets in coordination with American Forests staff. * Attend Reforestation Pipeline Partnership and other American Forests events as appropriate.  What We’re Looking For  We don’t expect you to check every single box. This position will work closely with the CAL FIRE Reforestation Services Program and the American Forests’ Reforestation Pipeline Partnership Team.    Working Conditions  The Coordinator position will be based in Davis, California at the Lewis A. Moran Reforestation Center. They will be expected to work in person at LAMRC and regularly in the field with shifts varying depending on the season. Some weekend shifts may be required. Frequent travel (including overnight) will be required during the cone collection season, June – September.    Office work is expected including recordkeeping, supporting contract administration, attending meetings, writing reports, and emailing. Most days will be spent in the field (around the nursery in the off season or in remote forest areas during season) where the Technician will be expected to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time. The work requires lifting materials which may weigh up to 50 lbs. Responsibilities may take place in a field setting, which includes, but is not limited to varying terrain and dense vegetation; possible exposure to wildlife, ticks, poison oak, and mosquitos; hot, rainy, and cold conditions; severely burned landscapes with standing dead trees and little/no shade coverage.    Compensation & Benefits  This is a full-time, hourly non-exempt position with a 17-month term, beginning January 2026. The budgeted hourly pay range is $26-28 per hour.
