SUMMARY

The Marion VA Health Care System is seeking a full-time Nursing Assistant to join the Community Living Center within Nursing Service, located in Marion, IL.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Nursing Assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
  • Experience, Education or Training:
  • Six months of general experience. Experience must demonstrate the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform the work of a NA; OR
  • One year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation; OR,
  • Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related training course of study or program of less than one year as a Nursing Assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Responsibilities

DUTIES

The Nursing Assistant (NA) may perform duties in a variety of health care sitting such as outpatient, inpatient, home, or community living care, acute, subacute. The NA will care for patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains positive therapeutic relationships by displaying respect for human dignity in interaction with patient/resident, families and/or significant others by utilizing learned communication skills.
  • Will learn to appropriately utilize blood glucose monitoring equipment with infection control and lab instruction to obtain, document and report glucose reading for patients/residents and reports deviation from established parameters to appropriate nursing staff.
  • Begins to utilize observation skills for data collection. Documents and reports observations to appropriate nursing staff.
  • Documents care given, observations and responses to care using appropriate tools and systems in the written and electronic healthcare record format.
  • Participate in patient/resident centered care activities including shift report, providing, and contributing information for the development and review of the patient care plan.
  • Monitors and documents patient intake and output, reports deviations in a timely accurate manner to appropriate nursing personnel.
  • Performs and documents nursing procedures with scope of practice, level of experience and according to policy and standard procedures to care for the patient/resident for such procedures including but not limited to personal hygiene, oral care, physical comfort, activity/exercise/rest, nutrition, elimination, prevention of skin breakdown, and end of life comfort care.
  • Begins to engage in small group activities with patients/residents according to the veterans’ treatment and care plan to promote socialization, therapeutic and diversional activities.
  • Learns to utilize restorative and rehabilitative principles to promote patient/resident independence and recovery, encouraging and guiding patient/resident in bowel and bladder programs.
  • 1s trained to utilize equipment to promote patient/resident self-care, such as safe patient handling and mobility equipment, bathing and shower chairs, specialized bathtubs, and the veteran wander guard system.
  • Monitors patients and document monitoring according to level of observation for safety, end of life support, hourly rounding or other need identified by nursing personnel.
  • Monitors veterans who may be at risk for harming self and/or others according to established policy and procedures and appropriately refers issues to the charge nurse, team leader or other health care professional.
  • Participates in maintaining a clean, safe environment for the patient/resident.
  • Removes defective equipment from service and reports using appropriate format for repair or replacement.
  • Reports hazards, observes safety regulations, contributes to infection control, and utilizes proper aseptic technique in performance of duties.
  • Learns to utilize principles of proper body mechanics and employs safe patient handling and mobility equipment to prevent injury to self or others while caring for patients/residents.
  • Reports patient status to the RN and documents pertinent observations the electronic medical record according to established procedures.
  • Learns to set up patient care related equipment, such as oxygen delivery systems, portable and wall suction and warming or cooling systems and assists in monitoring proper functioning of equipment.
  • Organizes and obtains routine supplies and equipment for patient care
  • Assists with patient education activities including orienting patient/resident and family to room and unit policies.
  • Works as a cooperative, courteous member of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Safeguards the patient right to privacy by judiciously protesting information of a confidential nature.

The NA will conduct the above assignments under close supervision and refer issues/questions
to supervisors, higher graded NAs, or other healthcare professionals.
Work Schedule: Night shift (7:30 p.m. - 8:00 a.m.) with 12-hour tours to include weekend and holiday rotation as scheduled. There are six (6) 12-hour shifts and one eight (8) hour shift per pay period.

Additional Pay:

  • Shift Differential - 10% of basic pay for work performed during regularly scheduled hours between 6pm and 6am
  • Weekend Premium - 25% of basic pay for work performed between the hours of midnight Friday and midnight Sunday. This includes continuous service connected to the work performed during these hours.
  • Holiday Pay - two times basic hourly rate for regularly scheduled, non-overtime work on a designated holiday.
