Nursing Assistant – Position Summary The Nursing Assistant provides routine patient care and support services in accordance with established policies and procedures. Under the direction of a registered nurse or physician, this role ensures the highest quality of patient care at all times. Responsibilities include assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs)—bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning—as well as performing point‑of‑care testing (including blood glucose), obtaining weights, vital signs, intake and output, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC and PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), urine specimen collection, restraint placement and removal, and completing “ticket to ride” procedures. Responsibilities Communication & Professionalism Communicates clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team. Takes initiative to improve knowledge, skills, and performance. Requests assistance with planning and prioritizing tasks when appropriate. Participates in self‑review as requested. Direct Patient Care & Environment Maintenance Provides all ADLs and patient care tasks as directed by the RN. Maintains a safe, clean, and organized environment by completing safety checks, cleaning equipment, changing linens, emptying hampers, and keeping hallways clear. Acquires, distributes, and stocks supplies and equipment to support patient care. Delivers nourishments, fills water pitchers, and distributes patient mail. Core Clinical Responsibilities Performs UPMC nursing assistant core duties, including ADLs, point‑of‑care testing, vital signs, I&O, telemetry application, HAC/PSI prevention, specimen collection, and restraint placement/removal. Provides diversional activities to reduce or prevent restraint use. Documents care in the medical record according to established procedures. Completes clerical tasks as needed. Complies with all safety policies, including standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen protocols. Strictly adheres to all patient care and hospital information policies. Responds appropriately to emergent situations within the scope of the role. Provides one‑to‑one companionship or supervision as required. Performs duties in alignment with system‑wide competencies and behaviors. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of a UPMC Nursing Assistant or EIC training program. Knowledge of body mechanics and safe transfer techniques. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred. Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, meeting AHA standards (didactic and skills demonstration) within 30 days of hire.
