SUMMARY

The Nursing Skills Lab Assistant reports directly to the Director of Nursing and is responsible for maintaining and providing assistance in the nursing laboratories. The Lab Assistant supervises and guides students in the lab setting. This position involves collaboration with all nursing faculty who teach courses requiring practice in the skills lab.
This is a part-time, professional position. Up to 15 hours a week in the fall and spring semesters, with a maximum of 250 hours per semester.
RATE/RANGE: $30.00 - $32.00 per hour

QUALIFICAITIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required, Master’s degree in Nursing preferred, OR an Associate’s degree in Nursing with no greater than two (2) semesters until completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Preference will be given to Clinton Community Nursing program alumni when considering AAS RNs who are actively pursuing a BSN.
  • Active, unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.
  • Possesses required knowledge and can explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Have familiarity with clinical nursing techniques such as wound care, vital signs, injections, IV fluids, trach care, patient hygiene, etc.
  • Knowledgeable regarding infection control protocols, laboratory safety, and handling of hazardous waste, including sharps.
  • Capable of lifting manikins and equipment.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Proficient in computer-based skills and motivated to embrace new technologies.
  • Efficiently uses organizational and planning skills, including tact and diplomacy, while working with diverse student and faculty populations.
  • Able to work independently

Responsibilities
  • Assist nursing faculty in implementing the skills laboratory curriculum. This includes the use of a variety of patient care equipment and supplies, as well as computer-based instructional tools and programs.
  • Prepare equipment/simulators and supplies for the lab demonstration and student practice for all

On-campus labs are offered in all nursing courses.

  • Process requests for nursing instructional equipment and materials necessary for the skills laboratory in conjunction with nursing faculty and the Director of Nursing Education.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is properly maintained and functioning according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Have the ability to troubleshoot equipment.
  • Monitor and ensure the availability of laboratory supplies.
  • Align skills/simulation experiences to coincide with the theory being presented in the classroom.
  • Coordinate with faculty in designing scenarios and conducting simulations.
  • Assist with simulation activities in the Nursing Simulation Labs with low and high-fidelity manikins.
  • Provide supervision relative to the use of laboratory equipment and nursing practice and procedures.
  • Schedule and supervise open/free practice sessions for all nursing students during varied hours.
  • Assist instructors and/or students in the skills lab setting.
  • Serve as a resource person for faculty and students in matters relating to the lab.
  • Maintain a Nursing Lab environment conducive to student learning.
  • Perform administrative and record-keeping duties as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Other related duties as required.
