Are you a high school student looking to gain healthcare experience while working a flexible schedule? UPMC Altoona is excited to hire an outgoing, energetic high school student (age 16 and up!) to work as a casual Nutrition Services Assistant for our Nutrition Services Department!
Purpose: Prepares and portions cold food items (salads, desserts, beverages) for patients and staff. Serves hot and cold foods in the cafeteria and on patient lines. Cleans food prep areas, equipment, and service stations.

Experience: No prior experience necessary—comprehensive on-the-job training is provided.

  • During School Session - No more than 28 hours per week (Monday through Friday). No more than 8 hours per day.
  • School is out of Session - No more than 10 hours per day. No more than 48 hours in a week
Responsibilities
  • Sets up serving areas with all necessary food, beverages, and supplies. Stores leftovers properly.
  • Prepares and serves food according to portion guidelines. Restocks salad bar and beverage stations as needed.
  • Assembles and delivers non-patient supplies; maintains inventory and documentation.
  • Prepares and sets up food for special functions and coffee breaks.
  • Cleans equipment, carts, and workspaces using appropriate chemicals.
  • Operates and maintains dishmachine and floor scrubber.
  • Handles waste and compactor use properly.
  • Loads and delivers patient food carts, ensuring correct temperature and supply placement.
  • Prepares cold food items accurately and records changes and leftovers.
  • Follows FDA food safety standards, including glove use and temperature control.
  • Prepares supplemental feedings per patient list.
    Education and Training: High school diploma or active enrollment in a high school or GED program required. In lieu of a diploma or enrollment, a minimum of one year of relevant work experience is acceptable.
