JOB SUMMARY: The Obstetrical Technician (OB Tech) is an integral clinical support role within the Women’s Health and Newborn Care Service Line, functioning across Labor & Delivery (L&D), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Mother/Baby units. The OB Tech provides supportive patient care, unit readiness, and procedural assistance, which can include serving as a surgical scrub for Cesarean Sections; under the direction of the Registered Nurse. This role is essential to maintaining patient safety, unit efficiency, regulatory readiness, and team responsiveness in a dynamic, high-acuity environment. Responsibilities flex based on unit acuity, patient care demands, and any supportive nursing care as determined by the Charge Nurse or Team Lead. The Obstetrical Technician functions under the direction of the professional registered nurse. The professional registered nurse is ultimately responsible for the coordination and delivery of nursing care to women and newborns. The OB Tech is expected to maintain a 30-minute response time when on call and participate in scheduled Cesarean Section scrub call rotations as assigned. The OB Tech reports directly to the Manager of Women’s Health and Newborn Care- L&D, NICU, Mother/Baby Scheduling and Staffing Expectations: Work schedules are developed using a preferred scheduling model and are not guaranteed. Employees may be scheduled or required to work variable shifts, including every other weekend, holidays, or additional shifts as needed based on unit census, patient acuity, employee vacancies, or approved time off. Scheduling decisions are made to support safe patient care, staff safety, and operational continuity across the Women’s Health and Newborn Care service line. QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Licensure/Certification: a.)  Can be any of the following in accordance to the assigned job posting: Surgical tech certification within 6 months Licensed in practical nursing/GPN upon hire Approved by Perioperative services for scrub role as a certified nursing assistant Work Experience/Preferred Experience: a.)  Experience with perinatal, neonatal, or gynecologic populations preferred b.)  Beneficial skill sets may include clerical support, patient care assistance,       operative support, or phlebotomy: RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DUTIES: 1.   Functions within scope of practice based on certification/licensure 2.   Works under the direction of the Registered Nurse 3.   Adjusts daily responsibilities based on unit acuity and shift plan 4.   Maintains readiness to pivot across service areas as needed 5.   Participates in L&D/ NICU and/or Mother/Baby structure and assignments 6.   Performs other duties as assigned Clinical Support & Patient Care (Within Scope): 1.  Obtain and report vital signs for all age groups 2.   Assist with patient hygiene, mobility, transfers, and activities of daily living 3.   Assist with patient positioning and delivery table setup 4.   Perform intake and output measurements 5.   Perform newborn care tasks as trained and assigned, including: a.)  Hearing screens b.)  Newborn screening c.)  Glucose monitoring (report results to RN; no independent intervention) d.)  Newborn bathing e.)  Transcutaneous bilirubin screening (report results to RN) Cesarean Section & Procedural Readiness: 1.  Maintain continuous readiness for Cesarean Sections, including: a.)  Room setup b.)  Equipment checks c.)  Cleaning and restocking d.)  Function as surgical scrub for Cesarean Sections when trained and          assigned 2.  Assist with NICU and newborn procedural readiness, including radiant warmer      preparation and support during IV placement (holding/taping) Environment, Equipment & Supply Management: 1.  Maintain cleanliness and organization of all assigned areas including: a.)  Labor rooms b.)  Delivery rooms c.)  NICU spaces d.)  Medication rooms e.)  Outpatient/procedure rooms f.)  Stock, restock, and monitor supplies across all service areas 2.  Complete and/or Support: a.)  Monthly cleaning logs b.)  Instrument and equipment checklists c.)  Unit readiness checklists d.)  Report equipment concerns or supply shortages promptly to RN/Charge    Nurse Clerical & Operational Support: 1.  Perform clerical duties as assigned, including: a.)  Chart preparation, assembly, and disassembly b.)  Order entry (within role access) c.)  Transfer paperwork management d.)  Building newborn admission folders e.)  Compiling and maintaining patient education materials f.)  Review departmental emails and communications as required Quality, Safety & Regulatory Participation: 1.  Adhere to infection prevention and hand hygiene standards 2.  Participate in audits, safety checks, and quality improvement operations as        Assigned 3.  Report safety concerns, near misses, or events promptly 4.  Support department initiatives including Just Culture, patient experience, and         regulatory readiness Education & Professional Responsibilities: 1.  Complete all assigned and independent education by required deadlines 2.  Maintain personal competency and skills validation 3.  Assist in onboarding and education of new OB Technicians as requested 4.  Attend required staff meetings and department education sessions Floating & Assignment Parameters: 1.  May be assigned to task-based support roles in other departments when not needed        within WHNC 2.  May not independently assume patient assignments outside scope 3.  May not enter isolation rooms 4.  Must remain immediately available to return to WHNC if called REQUIRED STAFF COMPETENCIES: Demonstrates support for organizational and departmental mission.
