We are seeking an experienced Occupational Health Nurse to deliver high-quality, professional health services to employees across the UK rail industry, including those in safety-critical roles. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for conducting a full range of medical assessments in line with Eurotunnel’s Medical Standards, ensuring employees are fit to perform their duties safely and effectively. Working within the Occupational Health department, you will support staff through management referrals, provide expert guidance on fitness to work, and contribute to the overall wellbeing of the workforce through regular health promotion initiatives. Conduct routine occupational health assessments, including periodic medicals, pre-employment screenings, return-to-work evaluations, health surveillance, and management referrals, including drug and alcohol testing.
- Maintain accurate and confidential medical records in accordance with data protection regulations and clinical governance standards.
- Provide expert occupational health advice to management, supporting initiatives such as health campaigns, flu vaccinations, defibrillator use, emergency response, and health surveillance programmes.
- Organise and host professional site visits, including occasional night-time visits during maintenance work, and coordinate exchange visits with French occupational health colleagues.
- Offer guidance and signposting to specialist services, referring employees to appropriate professionals such as counsellors, physiotherapists, or consultants when necessary.
- Collaborate effectively with managers, HR, safety teams, and occupational health physicians to deliver integrated health and wellbeing support.
- Serve as the primary user of the occupational health software system, issuing certificates and reports to employees and management.
- Support and train other members of the occupational health team as needed, contributing to the department’s goal of achieving SEQOHS accreditation.
- Actively participate in the Health and Wellbeing Group to develop and promote initiatives that enhance employee health and wellbeing across the organisation.
Qualifications and Experience
- Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration; a post-registration qualification in Occupational Health (e.g., Diploma or SCPHN) is desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in occupational health, ideally within safety-critical or high-risk industries such as rail or transport.
- Skilled in conducting safety-critical medicals, drug and alcohol testing, and fitness-for-work assessments.
- Strong understanding of UK rail industry medical standards and occupational health legislation.
- Confident clinical decision-maker with sound judgement in assessing employee fitness.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and experienced in using occupational health software systems.
- Knowledge of UK Health & Safety law, employment legislation, data protection, and medical confidentiality.
- Experience in delivering health promotion campaigns and, ideally, ergonomic assessments.
- Qualified First Aider and trained in administering vaccinations (both desirable).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all levels of the organisation.
- Basic spoken and written French is an advantage, but not essential.
