SUMMARY OF POSITION:

This role supports the entire mill by providing professional occupational health nursing care services to employees on a routine and emergency basis to promote a healthy lifestyle, to prevent and/or reduce incidence of illness, disability and accidents in the workplace and to support rehabilitation and restore health.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent interpersonal, diplomacy, and written and oral communication skills
  • Legally licensed to practice as a registered nurse in Ontario
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BScN)
  • Certification as an Occupational Health Nurse (COHN (C))
  • Current and valid registration in the Extended Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current registration and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
  • Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR, audio and vision Fit testing, and PFT
  • Successful completion of approved audiometry and spirometry course
  • 5 years of experience in Occupational Health Setting
  • Knowledge of disability management principles and practices, medical surveillance principles, and adult education (training/educating workers regarding job safety)
  • Problem solving abilities

Responsibilities
  • Interpretation and application of occupational safety and health regulations
  • Perform new hire and periodic health screenings for all employees, as well as medical monitoring and surveillance
  • Assessment and treatment of minor illness/injuries
  • Develop and supply information about written health and safety programs to ensure compliance with provincial and federal regulatory programs such as hearing conservation, respiratory protection, and immunization, and participate in Wellness Programs
  • Promotion of employee health and wellness including proactive health clinics, i.e. heart health (BP, cholesterol checks)
  • Apply the nursing process collecting a complete health history, advanced physical assessment, ordering and interpreting of diagnostic tests, formulating nursing and medical diagnosis, establishing a plan of care when needed
  • Takes care of health-related administrative work such as clinical documentation, medical records, and accident and illness investigations/reports, as well as organization goals and projected outcomes
  • Develop employee-centred plan of care using up-to-date health policies and research-based guidelines, as well as continuous monitoring to maintain an exceptional quality program
  • Identifies and interprets diagnostic and screening tests in the assessment of occupational health functions such as respiratory, audiometric, ergonomics, etc.
  • Work with Human Resources to manage medically required accommodations such as sick leaves, safe return to work programs, short-term disability and WSIB claims, as well as communicating with employees, physicians, short-term disability provider, and WSIB
  • Perform new hire health screening including performing PFT and Fit testing, as well as conducting respirator fit testing as the coordinator of the Respirator Protection Program
