Responsibilities
  • Problem Recognition and Analytical Capabilities:
  • Recognizing when something is wrong or likely to go wrong and proactively addressing issues to support safety improvements across Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL).
  • Assessing situations objectively and recommending appropriate courses of action to site supervisors and team members.
  • Analyzing data or information by identifying underlying principles, causes, or facts and breaking complex information into manageable components.
  • Identifying objects, actions, and events by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or conditions.
  • Applying critical thinking by using logic and reasoning to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Applying general rules to specific problems to develop sound, logical answers.
  • Organizing specific inputs and observations to create meaningful summaries and actionable conclusions.
  • Evaluating information to determine compliance with laws, regulations, and standards using relevant information and sound judgment.
  • Utilizing risk management principles and thinking creatively to solve problems and propose innovative solutions.
  • Communication:

  • Demonstrating excellent written and oral communication by writing clear instructions and reports, delivering safety training and awareness sessions, and interfacing with jurisdictional authorities, regulatory agencies, and other relevant bodies.
  • Critically reviewing contractor plans and providing constructive, meaningful feedback.
  • Maintaining effective interaction and communication with applicable CNL personnel, construction supervisors, contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Program Implementation and Oversight:
  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring OSH programs, project-specific work plans, and risk registers to ensure compliance with CNL and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting formal and informal oversight inspections and audits to evaluate project and contractor adherence to OSH plans, procedures, and legislative standards.
  • Performing field observations to identify non-compliance, gaps, or opportunities for improvement, and following up on corrective actions.
  • Supporting the tendering and contractor selection process by reviewing submitted OSH programs and work plans.
  • Field Presence, Coaching, and Engagement:
  • Maintaining regular presence in work areas to actively support safe work execution and build rapport with site personnel and contractors.
  • Coaching and mentoring project team members, supervisors, and contractors to foster safe behaviours and increase compliance with safety expectations.
  • Promoting and encouraging hazard reporting, near-miss identification, and pause/stop-work actions where appropriate.
  • Modelling desired safety behaviours and helping shape a proactive, high-performing safety culture.
  • Incident and Non-Compliance Management:
  • Assisting in the investigation and follow-up of incidents, non-compliance events, and identified deficiencies.
  • Supporting or leading root cause analysis and developing recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Preparing detailed reports and ensuring the implementation and documentation of corrective actions.
  • Maintaining accurate records in applicable data management systems to support traceability and continuous improvement.
  • Risk Assessment and Technical Safety Support:
  • Providing subject matter expertise for developing task-specific and comprehensive project risk assessments.
  • Assisting in creating safety work procedures to support CNL’s Integrated Work Control and Engineering Change Control programs.
  • Delivering timely and credible technical responses to support requests from stakeholders.
  • Ensuring consistency and quality of OSH documentation in alignment with corporate standards.
  • Industrial Hygiene Support and Monitoring:
  • Supporting industrial hygiene program delivery through maintaining exposure inventories, conducting basic monitoring, and calibrating instruments.
  • Completing industrial hygiene oversight activities, including audits and field observations, to ensure compliance with legal and programmatic expectations.
  • Conducting or assisting in hearing testing, scheduling medical baselines, and supporting routine industrial hygiene surveillance activities.
  • Providing project-specific industrial hygiene guidance and maintaining visible field presence to reinforce expectations.
  • Training, Compliance, and Professional Development:
  • Completing all CNL-required training, including role-specific and Radiation Protection training.
  • Maintaining certifications and engaging in ongoing professional development to support effectiveness in the role.
  • Promoting and sharing new knowledge with peers to enhance team competency.
  • Adhering to CNL information protection policies and maintaining confidentiality where required.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
