Salary:

  • Civil Crown Counsel 2: $5,462.50 to $6,764.60 biweekly ($142,571 to $176,556/year)
  • Civil Crown Counsel 3: $7,275.46 to $8,067.13 biweekly ($189,889 to $210,552/year)

The Legal Services Division of the Ministry of Justice supports the Minister in providing legal advice to the Premier and Cabinet. QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD) is required. For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required. You must be an active member or must have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.

This opportunity is available to experience lawyers at the Civil Crown Counsel 2 or Civil Crown Counsel 3 level.

  • Civil Crown Counsel 2 (over 4 years of related experience)
  • Civil Crown Counsel 3 (over 11 years of related experience)

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following assets:

  • 8 years experience practicing law.
  • Experience working within Education, Public Administration and/or Information Management.
  • LL.M or other relevant postgraduate degree.
  • Experience teaching law at university.
  • Experience in distance education programming and resources.
  • Experience working within the Government (Legal Services Division).
  • Experience includes, but is not limited to, legal writing experience, program and project management, education administration, e-Learning development, and the use of technology in teaching or learning or research.
  • Experience in the design and delivery of adult or professional education curriculum and programming.
  • Experience in legal research.
  • Ability to write in a broad range of legal topics.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

If you’re eager to contribute to internal learning programs and thrive in a dynamic, learning-centred environment, consider joining the Organizational Learning Office (OLO) as Education Counsel.
In this role, you’ll apply your legal knowledge and understanding of adult pedagogical theory and the learning needs of legal professionals to support learning and development across the Legal Services Division. You’ll lead long-term projects and lead the design of educational programs, events, and resources for Civil Crown Counsel, leaders, and support staff. You’ll also contribute to initiatives related to managing student programs, succession planning, knowledge management, and supporting the furtherance of the Legal Services Division’s and OLO’s strategic and operational plans.
This position involves regular collaboration with staff across the Legal Services Division and with those engaged in legal education - including legal academics, members of the bar, and other subject-matter experts.

Your main responsibilities in the role will include but not limited to:

  • Support the Director in promoting a culture of learning across the Division.
  • Lead the timely development and implementation of plans, initiatives, and programs and the lead the design and delivery of courses, events, and resources tailored to identified learning needs.
  • Apply curriculum design expertise to complement subject matter provided by Civil Crown Counsel and other experts.
  • Collaborate with event planning colleagues to align logistics with content and delivery.
  • Oversee the successful execution of education events, including travel as required.
  • Research and draft educational materials such as course content, agendas, case studies, discussion questions, video scripts, and facilitator guides.
  • Develop a strong understanding of adult learning theory and the evolving needs of the Legal Services Division.
  • Monitor legal developments to inform learning priorities.
  • Lead and support student programs, including recruitment, onboarding, and mentorship.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives such as knowledge management and cross-team collaboration.
  • Support change management and communication strategies that reinforce learning goals.
