ON-CALL TRANSPORTATION DATA ENGINEER – REMOTE

ICF is seeking an On-call Transportation Data Engineer, who will lead efforts to apply advanced data science techniques and machine learning models to analyze transportation data, providing actionable insights to improve transportation systems. This includes route planning, traffic management, fleet operations, and infrastructure development working with some of our clients in New York state. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science, data engineering, project management, and transportation data, coupled with leadership experience managing cross-functional projects and data programs. Additionally, experience working with external customers, a consulting background, PMP certification, and expertise in cloud technologies is highly desirable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Transportation Engineering, Statistics, or a related field preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in data science roles. Applications in transportation a plus.
  • 5+ years proven experience leading data science projects, data programs, and product delivery.
  • PMP certification (Project Management Professional) a plus.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in data engineering practices, including data pipelines, ETL processes, and data architecture.
  • Extensive expertise in machine learning techniques, predictive modeling, and statistical analysis.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL.
  • Extensive experience with big data technologies and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Advanced knowledge of transportation systems, operations, and related datasets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with external customers and experience in a consulting environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certifications in additional data science areas or cloud technologies.
  • Experience with geospatial analysis and transportation modeling tools.
  • Familiarity with real-time data processing and streaming analytics.
  • Prior experience in leading customer-facing projects with a focus on transportation solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong project management skills, including experience with Agile methodologies.
Responsibilities
  • Analyze large-scale transportation datasets to identify patterns, trends, and predictive insights that optimize transportation systems.
  • Develop and deploy machine learning models to support decision-making in transportation operations, safety improvements, and infrastructure planning.
  • Lead end-to-end data science projects and data programs, from conceptualization and data preparation to model development and deployment.
  • Manage cross-functional teams and ensure alignment of data science initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with data engineering, software development, and business stakeholders to deliver data-driven solutions.
  • Design and develop transportation data products that address complex business problems and enhance operational efficiencies.
  • Engage with external customers, providing consulting services, presenting findings, and delivering tailored data solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to junior data scientists and project teams.
  • Ensure data engineering best practices are followed, ensuring data quality, integrity, and accessibility.
  • Utilize cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP) for scalable data processing, storage, and deployment.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and transportation technologies.
