  • SACT Prescription Verification:

Legally required in some regions, these pharmacists verify complex SACT prescriptions to ensure accuracy and patient safety.

  • Adverse Event Management:

They manage and monitor side effects and toxicities associated with cancer therapies, an essential role given the complexity of SACT.

  • Patient and Clinician Education:

They educate patients and other healthcare team members on treatment regimens, medication acquisition, and self-advocacy, simplifying complex information.

  • Clinical Trial Support:

They facilitate and evaluate clinical trials, manage investigational drugs, and ensure compliance within trial protocols.

  • Team Integration:

They are integral members of the multidisciplinary cancer care team, working to optimize workflows and implement guideline recommendations.

What “Level 3” or Advanced Status Implies:

  • Advanced Knowledge and Experience:

This level indicates a pharmacist with in-depth knowledge of oncology pharmacology and extensive experience in designing, implementing, and monitoring cancer treatments.

  • Specialized Training:

Pharmacists at this level often have specialized training, such as a fellowship in oncology pharmacy or a Board Certification in Oncology Pharmacy (BCOP®) from the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS).

  • Leadership and Responsibility:

They are expected to be role models, provide leadership, and demonstrate advanced communication, persuasion, and negotiation skills to influence patient and provider behaviors.

  • Complex Patient Populations:

They manage the pharmacotherapeutic treatments of patients with various cancers, non-malignant hematologic conditions, and those receiving palliative or survivorship care.

  • Clinical or Healthcare experience with strong knowledge of patient and clinical pathways.
  • Proven expertise in Electronic Patient Records (EPR)— Meditech

  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and lead conversations between clinical and technical stakeholders.
