POSITION SUMMARY: The Oncology Social Worker is an integral member of an interdisciplinary team and provides comprehensive psychosocial needs assessments for patients and families with cancer. Provides a range of counseling, educational and case management services to Cancer Center patients and community groups. Involved in program and educational development, crisis intervention and consultation for patients and staff members throughout the hospital. May provide training and guidance to graduate students. Qualifications EDUCATION:  Master’s Degree in Social Work or Master’s Degree in Counseling   CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Current social work licensure in New Mexico and completes annual CEU’s per licensing board.   SKILLS: * Strong case management skills, interpersonal and assessment skills. Understanding medical terminology and an ability to formulate counseling and case management plans in conjunction with the medical team. * Ability to work independently and lead and co-lead therapy and educational groups. * Strong crisis intervention skills for patients in emergency situations. * Flexibility with job assignments. * Ability to identify people at risk of complicated grief and bereavement, and its association with depression and comorbid complications. * Awareness and practice of self-care and appropriate professional boundaries. * Active listening; the social worker will take their lead from their clients, assessing the patient’s and family’s needs and preferences for care. * Competent computer skills for word processing and data collection.   EXPERIENCE: Two years clinical experience in hospital, long-term care or hospice setting.  Experience in program development and leadership preferred. Oncology experience preferred.   NATURE OF SUPERVISION: -Responsible to: Director, Cancer Center   ENVIRONMENT:       -Bloodborne Pathogen  B Multiple simultaneous activities around patient care. Exposure to infectious diseases and intermittent exposure to blood, excrements, odors and noise. Work area has normal heat light and air.   PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle crisis situations. Has knowledge of and uses good body mechanics.  
Responsibilities
The Oncology Social Worker provides comprehensive psychosocial needs assessments and a range of counseling and case management services to patients and families with cancer. They are also involved in program development and crisis intervention throughout the hospital.
