Description

LOCATION: TORONTO

We are looking for a curious, creative and motivated leader to help steer the agenda as a news editor in our Ontario news bureau. The successful candidate has proven copy editing skills and solid news judgment. We want someone who will be just as comfortable guiding a junior reporter on a breaking news file as they are fine-tuning a complex court story. The news editor works closely with the Ontario bureau chief, a group of talented reporters based in the Toronto newsroom and CP bureaus across the country.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Strong decision-making skills and excellent news judgment
  • Meticulous editing skills and ability to operate under tight deadline pressure
  • Eagerness to take the reins whenever major news breaks across the region
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Working knowledge of CP Style
  • Professional experience with different media platforms, including print, broadcast, video and multimedia
Responsibilities
  • Help co-ordinate coverage of the daily news report in Ontario in consultation with the bureau chief, making sure we’re on top of key breaking stories while working with reporters on longer-term assignments
  • Triage and assign staff to cover breaking news, routine events and features, emphasizing exclusive developments and enterprise work
  • Co-ordinate coverage of video, audio and other multimedia elements
  • Serve as the front-line copy editor for the team
  • Clearly communicate expectations, enforce deadlines and encourage a culture that values accuracy, speed and exceptional writing
  • Be available to work in-office at our Toronto headquarters at least three days a week
