The Accommodation Services Division, under the Department of Finance, is seeking a highly motivated 2nd Class Assistant Power Engineer to work in the Central Powerhouse facility in downtown Winnipeg. Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a 2nd Class Power Engineering Certification Registered with the Province of Manitoba.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including wearing Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Must have satisfactory Criminal Records Check, security check (if applicable) and Child Abuse Registry Check.
  • Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Experience Working in a 1st or 2nd Class High Pressure Steam Plant as a Shift Engineer.
  • Experience working with Fire and life Safety systems.
  • Experience working with High Pressure boilers, large chillers, cooling towers, hot water and chilled water systems connected to buildings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while demonstrating initiative.
  • Experience working with Building Management Systems.
  • Experience performing water treatment for; boilers, hot water and chilled water systems.
  • Understanding and applying Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulation and power engineers act and regulation of Manitoba.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts.

Duties:
Reporting to the Chief Power Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for the overall safe and efficient operation of a 1st Class High Pressure Heating Plant, and all of its auxiliaries. The incumbent will also supervise the operation of heating/cooling, water supply and electrical generating equipment, respond to fire alarms, and observe and record all readings relating to energy consumption, steam and water pressures and cooling systems. The incumbent will be required to complete chemical testing and adding of chemicals for the boiler, chilled water and cooling tower systems, test run emergency stand-by generators, fire booster pumps, as well as following regulations set out by the Department of Labour with regards to safe operations and inspections. This position may provide guidance and ensure the quality of work of employees in less senior technical positions such as Assistant Operating Engineers and Maintenance Assistants.
