Join a dynamic energy team driving innovation in thermal resource development
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically proficient Operational Drilling and Completion Engineer with a specialty in thermal applications to join our Calgary-based team on a full-time basis. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in planning, executing, and optimizing drilling and completion operations for thermal projects—driving technological advancement and operational excellence in the development of unconventional and heavy oil assets.
In this position, you will be responsible for end-to-end well delivery, from design to execution, including troubleshooting, safety management, and post-job evaluation, with a strong focus on SAGD (Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage), CSS (Cyclic Steam Stimulation), and other thermal recovery methods. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver efficient, innovative, and safe solutions that maximize asset value.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead the planning, design, and execution of drilling and completion programs for thermal wells, including horizontal and multi-lateral wellbores in heavy oil and oil sands environments.
· Develop detailed well designs, incorporating thermal recovery considerations, formation characteristics, and optimized completion strategies to maximize production and operational efficiency.
· Evaluate thermal recovery techniques such as SAGD, CSS, in-situ combustion, and emerging methods, integrating best practices and new technologies into field applications.
· Oversee daily field operations to ensure adherence to safety, environmental, and quality standards, providing technical guidance and troubleshooting to field personnel.
· Support procurement of drilling and completion services and equipment, working closely with supply chain and vendors to ensure cost-effective, fit-for-purpose solutions.
· Analyze drilling and completion performance metrics, prepare end-of-well reports, and recommend process improvements for future operations.
· Ensure regulatory compliance with the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), occupational health and safety standards, and company policies.
· Collaborate with geoscience, reservoir, and production engineering teams to optimize well placement, steam chamber development, and overall thermal project performance.
· Lead risk assessments, participate in hazard identification and mitigation, and facilitate safety meetings and incident investigations as required.
· Mentor junior engineers and share technical expertise within the organization.
Qualifications & Experience
· Bachelor’s degree or higher in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline. Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility in Alberta is strongly preferred.
· 5+ years of direct experience in drilling and completion operations, with a minimum of 3 years in thermal applications (SAGD, CSS, etc.).
· Demonstrated expertise in the design and execution of thermal wells, including knowledge of wellbore integrity, thermal tubulars, isolation strategies, and artificial lift considerations.
· Solid understanding of the geology and reservoir behavior of oil sands and unconventional plays.
· Proficiency with well design and modeling software (e.g., WellPlan, OpenWells, WellView, Landmark, or similar).
· Strong working knowledge of Alberta regulations and permitting processes.
· Track record of delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget in a fast-paced operational environment.
· Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
· Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
· Willingness to travel to field sites as needed and participate in after-hours troubleshooting or support.
Preferred Assets
· Experience with new thermal technologies (e.g., solvent-assisted processes, electromagnetic heating, etc.).
· Advanced training or certification in well control (IWCF/IADC), hazard analysis (HAZOP/HAZID), or project management (PMP).
· Prior experience with cost estimation and AFE preparation for thermal drilling and completion programs.
· Strong professional network within the Canadian heavy oil and oil sands industry.
Key Competencies
· Technical Acumen: In-depth knowledge of thermal drilling and completion engineering, problem diagnosis, and innovative solution development.
· Safety Leadership: Commitment to safe work practices, risk management, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
· Project Management: Effective planning, prioritization, and resource allocation to deliver complex thermal well programs.
· Collaboration: Proven ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
· Adaptability: Agility in navigating evolving project requirements, regulatory changes, and field challenges.
Why Join Us?
· Be part of an industry-leading team shaping the future of Canadian thermal resource development.
· Access to cutting-edge technologies, ongoing professional development, and advancement opportunities.
· Full-time, Calgary-based position with competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and flexible work arrangements.
· Inclusive, safety-focused workplace with a commitment to sustainability and responsible resource stewardship.
