THE OPPORTUNITY Western Forest Products is hiring for an Operational GIS Technician to join our GIS team based on Northern Vancouver Island, BC on a 13-month contract basis. What You’ll Do: The Operational GIS Technician is an entry to general-level GIS position. The GIS Technician is frequently called upon to support Timberlands groups and, to a lesser degree, the Inventory & Analysts in operational and strategic planning requirements. The Operational GIS Technician supports planning and reporting by loading and maintaining spatial data sets, producing error free map products and other visualizations to support the business objectives. The Operational GIS Technician will continue to enhance specialized GIS data by receiving and managing field data while producing appropriate outcomes for field engineers and planners. Who You Are: You preferably have a post-secondary degree or diploma in GIS or Forestry with working experience in GIS and training in current GIS software and programming languages. You bring knowledge and skills in geomatics - editing, mapping, geo-processing, querying, and reporting - and you’re proficient with the ESRI suite of products and GPS data processing. You can confidently carry out projects to completion and document your processes along the way. Ideally, you have a strong understanding of forestry requirements and forest management systems. You are detail-oriented, organized, and customer-focused, with excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and an ability to work as a team. What We Offer: * Salary range of $62,000 - $76,000 CAD based on skill level, qualifications, and experience * Extended health and dental benefits – WFP pays for 100% of the employee monthly premiums * 3 weeks’ vacation to start  * Employee family assistance program * Financial support for learning and development opportunities  Work Environment: This role is to be performed in person at either our Englewood Forest Operation in Woss, BC or our Port McNeill, BC office. RESPONSIBILITIES Key Responsibilities * Geospatial: Capture and/or import spatial features, convert data into appropriate formats, undertake basic geoprocessing attribute editing, and assist in managing operation feature datasets; * Mapping: Produce and maintain operational maps from standard map templates and produce maps for operational and planning tactical initiatives as required; * Forestry Systems: Perform editing, spatial queries and mapping in the forest management system (LRM), implement data quality checks, and author and edit map templates as required; * Ensure that skills and knowledge necessary for the effective performance of the role remain current. Leadership * Participate effectively in programs designed to improve safety, reduce operational costs, and maximize value and margins while meeting customer requirements; * Participate in a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Safety and Environmental Performance * Demonstrate adherence to company safety and environmental processes and procedures. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience * Post-secondary degree or diploma in GIS from a recognized and accredited institution is preferred or a post-secondary degree or diploma in Forestry with work experience in GIS is preferred; * Proven and recurring success in skills, knowledge and competencies directly related to the position responsibilities; * Documented training with current GIS software and programming languages; * Demonstrated forest management acumen specific to forestry requirements and challenges; * Registration or eligibility for professional accreditation is preferred. Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies * Working knowledge of ESRI (ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro) products is mandatory; * Working knowledge of Oracle, LRM, Python is preferred; * Skills in geomatics including editing, mapping, geo-processing, querying, and reporting; * Refined communication skills both written and oral; * Demonstrated skills in project management, problem solving and organization; * Customer service-oriented disposition; * Strong ability to work as a team in a fast-paced environment.
