Job Purpose Reporting to the Manager of Operations Engineering, the Operations Engineer will work on a variety of engineering projects related to wind plant, solar plant, battery systems and electrical power system performance. The Operations Engineer will manage performance improvement initiatives, retrofit projects, reliability improvement projects, root cause analysis, maintenance planning and major repairs in coordination with on and offsite support. The primary responsibilities for this position include the monitoring, remediation, optimization and reliability improvement of wind, solar and battery storage assets along with balance of plant and substation equipment. The day-to-day activities have a wide degree of variety involving multiple operating projects located throughout the United States. This role may performed from our offices in Boston, MA or Portland, ME and follows a hybrid schedule of three days per week in the office. Remote candidates may be considered depending on location. Responsibilities Monitor and evaluate asset performance. Report on and recommend design or operational modifications to optimize safety, performance and long-term reliability. Make clear concise recommendations taking considerations of performance, timing, capital expenditures, and budgeting. Lead the root cause analysis and remediation plans for defective equipment, enhance the design of problematic parts to improve safety, performance and reliability. Evaluate energy system acquisitions, focusing on future reliability, costs, and energy generation. Coordinate operation, maintenance, and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment. Evaluate system end-of-life extension and repower opportunities. Planning, coordination, budgeting, and supervising on-site and off-site activities related to retrofit and repair of the company's energy projects. Establish and manage relationships with service providers to perform repair work. Ensure relevant standards are implemented for the successful return to service of repaired units in accordance with design and supplier standards. Plan, prepare, and instruct training programs as required to share field engineering and/or product knowledge with operations staff. Perform administrative functions, such as writing technical and/or job status reports, requesting quotes, ordering materials and services. Conduct work actions in compliance with industry standards for safety, quality, and environmental protection. Utilize technical expertise to enhance Longroad Energy’s culture of safety. Research and analyze change requests, design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application. Travel to operating sites within the United States. Expected annual travel of 10% to 25%. Minimum Qualifications B.S. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or comparable engineering experience. 2-5 years of engineering experience in renewable energy, oil and gas, power generation, shipping or similar industry. Experience with common spreadsheet and word processing systems. Experience in Python, SQL, reliability analysis, data analysis and computer-aided design software. Ability to clearly communicate technical details. The ability to perform essential physical functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation; this includes climbing 300’ wind turbines, lifting 50 lbs. above head, and meeting the weight requirement of safety gear, 310 lbs. or less. Valid driver’s license with the ability to qualify for DOT certification. Ability to travel as necessary for onboarding activities, cross-training, team meetings, and site visits. Desired/Preferred Qualifications Preference given to those candidates with industrial wind, battery system or solar experience. Experience with renewable energy vendors and independent service providers. Proximity to a Longroad office for increased in-person collaboration and relationship building.
