Description POSITION: Operations Support and Development Specialist EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Full-Time ON-SITE: Detroit, MI WAGE TYPE: Salary Exempt ABOUT US The Industrial Sewing and Innovation Center (ISAIC) is a Detroit-based national nonprofit institute for innovation and skilling in the advanced manufacturing of apparel and textiles. We inspire and equip the industry with the confidence to adopt new technologies and skills by developing innovative manufacturing methods that enhance efficiency, promote sustainability, and establish human-centric industry standards that elevate people. POSITION SUMMARY The Operations Support and Development Specialist is responsible for supporting daily production operations, developing new production opportunities, and driving training initiatives within industrial sewing and textile manufacturing. This role interfaces with team members across production, innovation, training, and leadership to ensure successful implementation of new products or operational methods. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of sewing operations, apparel manufacturing, and product development for apparel and sewn goods, with the ability to train staff, optimize workflow for production lines, and support the growth of ISAIC’s manufacturing activities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (70%) TECHNICAL DESIGN Pattern drafting and digitization Updating and finalizing patterns, cleaning them up for production Grading Marker making Digitization of patterns using TukaCAD system Product optimization Working with Production Supervisor and production team to finalize sample and flow for production purposes Techpack Development in accordance with ISAIC standards Sample-making, including sewing, printing, and plotting patterns Become ISAIC’s Subject Matter Expert on software related to new product development, including TukaCAD, Tukatech printing systems, and plotting machine Work with VP, Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation to develop a plan for how ISAIC utilizes software and equipment for new product development internally and for external customers. ENTREPRENEURIAL SUPPORT Guide Design2Manufacturing participants through the program experience, taking their product from concept to final production sample. Connect them to mentorship of their training experience and learning through coordination check-ins and support with jurors. Support community partners in the process of sample-making and small-batch manufacturing with ISAIC, including use of software and equipment related to new product development, technical design, training, and small-batch production of products. TRAINING DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY (15%) Create internal and external trainings on new technology geared toward new product development & small batch production for new clients, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and community partners Deliver trainings on new technology for internal team members and external clients and partners. Package training for Skilling & Development department team for delivery of workshops Support production with standardization of work instructions for current production lines Occasional support with lectures and machine maintenance, cutting and bundling, and classroom supervision when Industrial Sewing courses are in session. PRODUCTION SUPPORT (15%) Inventory Management Work with Production Supervisor to develop and organize the auditing and recording plan and procedures in accordance with the mission and goals of the organization as well as the product mix. Manage Initial Quality Control Inspections by inspecting all incoming direct materials deliveries for quality defects and control that delivery is in line with PO documents. Inspect, record and report quality stats for incoming direct materials & top-of-the-line production (IQC - Initial Quality Control) and AQL (Acceptance Quality Limit). Oversee inventory controls on Direct Materials by periodically verifying inventory counts to prevent production stoppages and approving replenishment orders Quality Control Support Oversee and submit Month End Inventory counts with the support of management and team. Final quality check and approve customer orders for shipping. Support every aspect of internal audit quality system program from audit planning, implementation, feedback and re-audit as related to production, as required. Provide relevant data to Production Supervisor to assist in making certain that outgoing quality is to and above ISAIC standards of excellence Help to make certain that orders are complete and shipped when committed. QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES Qualifications Required 3+ years experience in industrial sewing, textile manufacturing, or cut-and-sew production environment. Strong knowledge of sewing equipment (single-needle, serger, binding machines, automated machines, etc.). Experience in technical design and pattern-making for apparel and sewn goods. Ability to develop SOPs, training programs, and process documentation. Strong troubleshooting skills related to sewing processes, materials, and equipment. Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in basic computer applications and digital pattern-making software (Microsoft Office, 2D/3D Digital Pattern Design Software production software). Preferred Experience in operations leadership or production supervision. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, or continuous improvement methodologies. Experience supporting new product launches or technical sewing development. Familiarity with quality systems and defect-reduction strategies. Bilingual abilities (e.g., English/Spanish) beneficial in production environments. Employees should be prepared for fluctuating noise conditions throughout the day. Frequent and consistent use of hands and wrists for computer usage Ability to sit or stand for extended periods Mobility required for on-site and off-site events Ability to assist with meeting/event setup, including safely lifting and moving items up to 10 lbs.
