Operations Support Representative Part-Time  Union About the Adler Planetarium The Adler Planetarium connects people to the universe and each other. Whether it is introducing a guest to the Ring Nebula, a neighborhood school to a community partner, a research team to a network of citizen scientists, or one staff member to another, the Adler's focus on meaningful connections dates back nearly a century. Today, the museum hosts more than half a million visitors each year and reaches millions more through youth STEM programs, neighborhood skywatching events, online citizen science, and other outreach projects. The Position The Adler Planetarium is seeking an Operations Support Representative to join our dynamic team located on Chicago's Museum Campus. This role assists in the daily operation of the museum and surrounding grounds. This is a union position with the Adler Planetarium Workers United, AFSCME Council 31. This individual will also be responsible for: * Conducting walkthroughs of the building and surrounding grounds - communicating or addressing maintenance issues accordingly. * Maintaining outside grounds daily for cleanliness and lawn maintenance (weeding, mowing, trimming, and watering) as well as powerwashing and assisting with snow and ice removal as needed. * Receiving, recording, communicating, and distributing mail, packages, and freight internally to Adler staff and onsite vendors. * Setting up and resetting for special activities, meetings, and events, including but not limited to moving tables, chairs, stanchions, and signs. * Assembly, installation, and disposal of furniture and equipment; patching and painting walls and ceilings; performing minor building repairs as needed; and completing electronic work orders. * Providing operational and office support, including inspecting Adler-owned vehicles, maintaining the coffee machine, restocking copier paper, and tracking inventory of supplies for first aid kits, office supplies, and general building maintenance. The Work Schedule Typical shifts will be 8 AM-3:30 PM as needed, especially Saturdays, Sundays, and/or holidays. Average work hours usually range from 14 to 29 hours weekly. This person is comfortable carrying out routine tasks, working outdoors in various weather conditions, and adapting to last-minute changes in the scope of work. They should be able to carry out written work orders and verbal instructions independently or as part of a team, communicating effectively as needed to ensure tasks are completed to perfection. Required Qualifications: * Flexible availability - weekdays, weekends, and holidays included * High school diploma or equivalent * One (1) year of work experience in grounds-keeping, custodial, general maintenance, painting, or a similar field. * Strong attention to detail in organization, prioritization of tasks, inspections, communication, and following written and verbal instructions. * Basic computer skills and experience with web searching and using office software, or a strong aptitude for learning new technology. * Must be able to follow basic safety procedures and precautions. * Able to carry and handle loads of up to 50lbs, move furniture and carts. * Able to use a ladder and/or lift with appropriate training. * Capable of working outdoors in various weather conditions. Preferred Qualifications: * Prior experience with patching and/or painting walls and ceilings is preferred. * Experience using Google Suite and/or a work order system (CMMS).
