LONG MARSTON RAIL INNOVATION CENTRE

Porterbrook is on an exciting journey at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre (RIC) in Warwickshire, and we’re looking for outstanding people to be a part of our team at the 135-acre site
We’ve made huge investments here that will see Long Marston RIC play a pivotal role in the future of the UK’s railway, as an exceptional facility to test and trial new traction technologies, securely store rolling stock and provide training in a live environment
The UK’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train was built and is being tested by Porterbrook here, and we’re also the home of the country’s largest outdoor rail exhibition, Rail Live
Our small, close-knit and passionate team based at the site ensure that everything runs smoothly across Long Marston RIC each day, and we have some exciting opportunities to join them

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Recognised formal training qualification (i.e. City & Guilds or equivalent)
  • Recognised formal assessor qualification (i.e. A1/ A2 or equivalent)
  • Recognised form internal verifier qualification (i.e. V1 or equivalent)
  • IOSH Managing Safety (Desirable)
  • Trained risk assessor
  • Trained accident investigator
  • Behavioural Based Safety training (Desirable)

KNOWLEDGE

  • Excellent knowledge of railway operations (Mainline & Depot)
  • Conversant with Railway Rule Book
  • Conversant with relevant Health & Safety Legislation and Rail Industry Standards
  • Conversant with ORR guidance document ‘Managing Staff Competence – Railway Safety Publication 1
  • Excellent knowledge of non-technical skills in a railway operational environment

KEY SKILLS

  • Extensive experience in performing rail operations including train driving (mainline & depot), and shunting
  • Previous experience in delivering rail operations training and performing competence assessments
  • Development of operational safety standards and procedures
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering a positive and sustaining safe delivery culture in an operational environment

Responsibilities

ROLE PURPOSE

To lead the development, implementation, and continued improvement of best-in-class training and competence management at Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre (LM RIC), to enable consistent safe delivery of rail operations carried out by internal staff and appointed external resources

Responsibilities

  • Development, implementation, and management of annual operational training plan covering the scope of all rail operations related roles at Long Marston RIC – based on a detailed task analysis
  • Development, implementation, and management of a competence management system (CMS) for rail related operations at Long Marston RIC aligned to the framework set out in ORR guidance document ‘Managing Staff Competence – Railway Safety Publication 1
  • Carry out a training needs analysis for all rail operatives at Long Marston RIC and periodically review to ensure solutions remain current and fit for purpose
  • Delivery of operational training (theory & practical) to rail operatives at Long Marston RIC
  • Update/ refine operational training in line with business needs and industry good practice
  • Carry out competence assessments for rail operatives at Long Marston RIC
  • Ensure personal competence files are in place and maintained for all rail operatives at Long Marston RIC
  • Develop and implement development plans where gaps in competence are identified and/ or following safety events
  • Mentor the Operations Team Leader to enable increased support capability with delivery of operational training, competence assessment, and post competence support
  • Development & delivery of operational safety briefings & toolbox talks to underpin & increase awareness & understanding of operational safety risks
  • Develop and maintain operational standards and operating procedures, ensuring alignment with relevant rules and training requirements
  • Support the Operations Manager with rail operations planning and supervision of rail operatives as required
  • Source external operational training providers as required
  • Carry out investigations into operational safety events as required by the Safety & Environment Delivery Partner
  • Develop operational safety notices as required by the Operations Manager
