Job Responsibilities The Ophthalmic Assistant is responsible for treating each patient as an honored guest in the Clinic. Assist ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions. They conduct the preliminary work- up of the patient, administer eye exams, administer eye medications, and instruct the patient in care and use of corrective lenses. Education and Experience High School or Equivalent Knowledge Customer Service English and Spanish Languages Computers and Electronics Physical Requirements: Standing for extended periods of time Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls Requires repetitive movement Job Duties Work up patients when not with the doctor by checking: History Visual Acuity Tonometry Dilated when indicated Manual and automated perimetry Monitors the patient flow by: Checking appointment schedule to make sure that patients are not overlooked or kept waiting an excessive amount of time Checking for phone messages at regular intervals Monitoring patients in the dilating area Reporting problems with patient care or patient flow to the supervisor immediately Escorts the patient to and from waiting area, to the cashier, and to their car as necessary Administer non-intravenous medications. Assist healthcare practitioners during surgery. Fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, or other vision aids. Includes exposure to disease or infections Assist with laser treatments Hands instruments to doctor in the exam room. Patches patients eyes Translates for a physician as requested. Make sure exam rooms are in order after each patient leaves Returns patient and pharmacy phone calls as needed Ability to make decisions that affect other people and/or the image and reputation of the practice. Requires being exact or highly accurate. Meeting strict deadlines. Adhere to company policies and protocol. Any other duties that may be required
Responsibilities
The Ophthalmic Assistant performs preliminary patient work-ups, administers eye exams, and assists ophthalmologists with clinical procedures and surgeries. They are also responsible for monitoring patient flow, maintaining exam rooms, and providing patient instruction on vision aids.
