JOB SUMMARY

The Ophthalmic Technician 3 performs skilled duties related to the eye. They assist the physician and are key in-patient ocular care.

Responsibilities
  • Initiates and documents the patient’s chief complaint, history of present illness, medical history, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings accurately, following compliance guidelines.
  • Performs testing such as visual acuity measurement, lensometry, pupil function testing, ocular motility, tonometry, and confrontation visual field testing. Provides other patient services as requested by the ophthalmologist.
  • Performs refractometry; manual manifest refraction to draft preliminary glasses prescription.
  • Performs specialty tests ordered by a physician, like pachymetry, BAT, PAM, color vision testing, Automated Perimetry, OCT, Keratometry, Pentecam, Topography, Endothelial Cell Count, IOL power calculations, Immersion and Contact A-Scan, Goldmann Perimetry, and others as directed.
  • Assists with minor surgery, intraocular injections, and laser treatments. Prepares patients for sterile procedures in an exam or treatment room.
  • Educates patient regarding the administration of medications, and pre and post-operative instructions, as directed by physician.
  • Handles specimens, biopsies and culture materials safely.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic and oral medications at the direction of a physician.
  • Opens and closes exam lanes. Ensures equipment is cleaned and disinfected. Makes sure battery-powered instruments are seated properly in recharge wells. Ensures lamps and projectors are switched off and under covers.
  • Assist with training new staff members to department standards set forth by each provider.
  • Assist Technical Supervisors with day-to-day activities to provide adequate coverage in the department.
  • Provide back-up coverage for Technical Supervisors when they are absent. Manage duties may include creating and managing clinic schedules for techs. Review and approve timecards for payroll deadlines. Attend department meetings and perform additional tasks as needed.
