Department: UHC: Ophthalmology Job Summary: The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant works hand in hand with the Ophthalmologists and prepares the patient for examination. Applies advanced knowledge to basic principles of Ophthalmic patient care to assist and support their assigned Physician and Team with complicated procedures in addition to routine procedures successfully. Responsible to carry out patient care as appropriate to expanded knowledge base. Performs various skills associated with the Ophthalmologist's and Clinic's needs and within their scope of practice. Skilled at tonometry, keratometry, BAT, PAM, VFD, CFD, Pachymetry, OPD, OCT, IOL Master. Knowledge of retinoscopy, A-Scan, contact lenses, fundus photography & external photos. Performs other duties as needed. Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED required. Current national certification or equivalent competency required within ninety (90) days of hire. Minimum one year ophthalmic back office experience required. Knowledge and Skills: Able to: read; write legibly; speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch. Licensures and Certifications: Successful completion of certification process through JCAHPO (Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology) or satisfactory completion of (competency in) Loma Linda Ophthalmology Departmental skills checklist completion required within ninety (90) days of hire. Responsibilities

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant prepares patients for examination, working closely with Ophthalmologists and applying advanced knowledge to support routine and complicated procedures.
