KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to review grant applications to assure they comply with applicable federal requirements.
  • Ability to provide technical assistance to state and local governments and other entities on mitigation related issues and basic engineering and environmental review requirements.
  • Ability to assist with program presentations and training workshops.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all levels of government concerning projects and program issues.
  • Ability to conduct mitigation assessments and collect data from the field.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work task and work independently with little instruction.
  • Ability to prepare detailed program reports as required.
  • Ability to handle multi-project management.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to travel overnight and to work non-traditional hours during emergency events and assume disaster related duties, as necessary.

Responsibilities

This position is in the Bureau of Mitigation at FDEM. The Bureau of Mitigation manages three Federal grants as well as one state of Florida grant to assist in reducing or eliminating the loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. This position’s responsibilities include providing support to the engineering and environmental teams.

The specific duties of this position are as follows:

  • Review project applications to assure project eligibility and compliance with Hazard Mitigation Programs.
  • Provide support to engineering and environmental areas during workshops and seminars.
  • Provide status reports on projects underway and oversees project timelines.
  • Monitor assigned projects, providing assistance on technical reviews to sub-grantees on project issues.
  • Keep update of the changes or variations of the Standard Operational Procedures for engineering and environmental.
  • Convey information clearly in writing and orally, edit and finalize letters.
  • Conduct training for co-workers on Hazard Mitigation Grant Program issues.
  • Perform other related duties and travel as assigned to include performing disaster duties because of declared and non-declared disasters.
