Description

ABOUT US:

Enablence is a leader in optical design and manufacturing for planar lightwave circuits (PLC). We are a leading provider of optical chips for datacom and telecom, and we are expanding into many other areas, including advanced vision applications and sensing.
We are growing our company as our volumes increase and we enter new markets. Enablence is seeking a senior optical engineer or scientist who can help in optical chip design, simulation, and testing. We offer a vibrant and fast-paced work environment in Ottawa, Canada, with many exciting projects.
While we prefer a candidate in Ottawa, we are willing to explore working remotely with the right candidate (travel will be needed in such cases).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven expertise in designing optical chips for commercial applications—and a genuine passion for the craft.
  • Proficient in using distributed version control systems like Git in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong understanding of integrated photonic components such as Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWGs), Mach-Zehnder Interferometers, and coherent optical hybrids.
  • Deep knowledge of light propagation physics and waveguide phenomena.
  • Hands-on experience with optical simulation tools (e.g., FDTD, BPM, FEM).
  • Familiar with optical testing methodologies, including Mueller Matrix-based testing and the interpretation of large datasets.
  • Capable of managing the entire design lifecycle—from simulation through fabrication, testing, and packaging.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a specialization in optics or photonics.
  • Proficiency in Python for scripting and data analysis.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in photonics or optical engineering.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada (Canadian citizens or permanent residents preferred), with roles based in our Ottawa, ON facility.
