Description
We live in a mobile and device driven world where knowledge of the physical world around us is needed. We rely on this knowledge to get around, to learn about our environment and to enable spectacular new features for custom applications. Apple is meeting those needs as robustly and as creatively as possible and is interested in people who want to help meet that commitment. The success we are striving will be the result of very skilled people working in an environment which cultivates creativity, partnership, and thinking of old problems in new ways. These elements come together to make Apple an amazing environment for motivated people to do the greatest work of their lives. You will become part of a team that sets the standard in cultivating excellence, creativity and innovation! If that sounds like the kind of environment that you find intriguing, then let's talk! The Optical Sensing Hardware team is seeking a motivated mechanical engineer to join us in developing state-of-the-art sensor features to bring Apple products to life. We develop sensors that change the way people interact with their technology. The team features a collaborative and hands-on environment that fosters engineering excellence, creativity, and innovation. At the end of the extraordinary team effort, your work will be in the hands of millions of people making a visible difference in their daily lives. As a mechanical engineer on the team, you will play a key role in specifying, developing, characterizing, and validating the mechanical design of optical sensing systems. DESCRIPTION In this role, you will work on the end-to-end design, development, and validation of optical sensing technologies into Apple’s portfolio of products. You will work collaboratively with a talented cross-functional team to generate and validate design concepts, and as the mechanical expert you will be responsible for engineering analysis and documentation for your piece of the project. Mechanical design and development of optical modules spanning from authoring specifications, defining/assessing system integration methods, conducting tolerance analysis, performing root-cause/failure analysis and supporting process development. Managing local and overseas suppliers through the product development lifecycle (from initial design/concept through system integration into final products). Driving design manufacturability with our component/module/system integration vendors to deliver scalable solutions for successful mass production. Cross-functional collaboration with Optical, Electrical, Process, Test, Reliability, Program Management, and Operations teams. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Hands-on experience designing for a production environment. Experienced in vendor engagement and technical project management. 3D CAD experience and proficiency in GD&T and tolerance analyses. Application of statistical tools and techniques (Matlab, Python, JMP, etc). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to craft clear engineering documentation (2D drawings, standard operating procedures, product specifications). Able to effectively collaborate with diverse team members and external vendors to define and achieve project goals. Interest, curiosity and motivation to learn and apply new engineering concepts. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related fields with 3+ years relevant proven experience PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS High volume, consumer electronics, or optical sensing experience. Practical experience with optical modules, packaging techniques, and optoelectronic components. Hands-on experience in designing precision optical fixtures and developing rapid prototypes. Applied knowledge in flex circuits, printed circuit boards, material science, and basic chemistry. Experience with JMP, MATLAB, scripting, and data analysis. Graduate/Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related fields
