JOB SUMMARY – WHAT TO EXPECT:

As the Optical Tool Making Specialist within our Lens Design and Metrology department, you will primarily assist in the completion of R&D projects through the manufacture of high quality, high precision optical insert tooling and associated mould cavity components to support critical cast moulding processes.
The role will also provide engineering support through the R&D workshop and a basic design function for realising engineering solutions to problems encountered to ensure that project schedules, production requirements and quality, cost and safety outcomes are always achieved.

Specifically, you will:

  • Setup and alignment of single point diamond turning machine tools to produce optical quality cavity tooling for the prototyping of lens designs.
  • Perform high level metrology checks to include the use of interferometers, microscopes and profile projectors to micron accuracy in the determination of radius and surface form on optical components.
  • Maintain the R&D insert database and paper records to ensure that an accurate account of all tooling produced is sustained.
  • Produce and assemble precision parts, jigs and special purpose machines using standard workshop machine tools and hand tools in support of R&D process developments.
  • Write, interpret and modify CNC machine tool programs to achieve desired parts and forms.
  • Machine quantities of insert tooling blanks as necessary to ensure that adequate supplies are always maintained.
  • Use laser marking or similar engraving systems to etch finished parts with identification/part numbers and/or associated product/engineering drawing information.
  • Collaborate with the drawing office to produce, review, update and approve engineering drawings in compliance with the PDM drawing management system using CAD software as appropriate.
  • Work with 3D printing equipment in the development of prototype designs.
  • Carry out repairs, refurbishments and improvements to equipment and tooling when required.
  • Accountable for the quality of all cavity mould tooling to leave the department workshops (all inserts manufactured are traceable on internal systems to the individual who manufactured the part).
  • Train insert manufacture personnel in the use of specialist equipment for the manufacture and measurement of both optical and non-optical products developed as part of R&D projects for ease of transfer to manufacturing.
  • Develop and update work instructions, charts and SOPs to maintain document accuracy in workshop practices.
  • Comply with the appropriate procedures to ensure that appropriate personnel are advised should an issue arise that presents a health and safety, equipment availability or product risk. Properly risk assess such issues and take appropriate action to avoid the condition until the problem is rectified to preserve the safety of products and staff.Contribute to continuous improvement projects and investigational activities within the R&D department and transfer learns to the manufacturing department.

ABOUT YOU:

We are looking for someone who is skilled in a variety of machining techniques who is results orientated, good attention to detail and focussed on quality with the following:

  • A good quality precision engineering background including use of CNC equipment. Preferably the job holder will be a time-served toolmaker with at least 3 years of workshop experience is essential.
  • Medical Device background would be advantageous to understand importance of regulations however we will consider other industries e.g. Aerospace, Automotive etc.
  • Experience building special purpose machines and equipment for a manufacturing process.
  • Setting and operation of manual, semi and automatic lathes, milling machines and other standard workshop machine tools.
  • Writing and editing of CNC lathe programs
  • Operation of visual and contact workshop-based metrology systems (radioscopes, profile projectors, microscopes, CMM’s, micrometres, callipers etc).Competence with 3D CAD and CAM systems, knowledge of drawing control management systems and understanding of engineering drawing standards is desirable but not essential
