QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

All Temporary/Relief Optometrists must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Experience: Twelve (12) continuous months of experience within the last three (3) years performing services similar in scope to those defined herein in a public or private institution. Internships do not count toward the required experience.
  • Licensure: Possess and maintain a current and valid license issued by the State of California, Board of Optometry to legally perform services in the State of California.
  • Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in the English language and able to communicate effectively. This includes speaking, understanding oral and written communication, and writing effectively in English. Candidates who fail to meet these qualifications shall not be permitted to perform services.

SERVICE DELIVERY REQUIREMENTS

Under the direction of the Institution/Facility CEO/CME or designee, the Temporary/Relief Optometrist shall provide services as permitted within the scope of practice and in accordance with facility policies and procedures. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Scheduling & Timeliness: Ensure all ordered Optometry services are scheduled promptly. Services must be delivered as scheduled unless unavoidable circumstances arise.
  • Clinical Services: Provide examination, diagnosis, treatment, and simple repairs in accordance with Business and Professions Code §3041 et al.
  • Referrals: Refer patients for consultations, diagnosis, treatment, and/or surgery to approved contract providers when necessary. Emergency situations are exempt from this process.
  • Continuity of Care: Maintain continuity of all work performed from start to finish.
  • Diagnosis & Treatment: Provide optometric services for conditions such as allergies, infections, and non-systemic conjunctival inflammations using appropriate diagnostic agents and medications.

(2) Additional Duties:

  • Conduct and document optometry exams and prescriptions
  • Perform optometric treatment including medication administration and diabetic ocular exams (dilated fundoscopy, specialist referral when needed)
  • Develop and coordinate individualized treatment plans (includes lens/frame selection and fitting when medically necessary)
  • Provide ongoing evaluations and referrals
  • Respond to ocular emergencies and coordinate with medical staff during clinic hours
  • Provide follow-up services as require
