Job Details Job Location: SURGICAL HOSPITAL - MANHATTAN, KS 66502 Position Type: Full Time - 32 hrs or more per week Education Level: RN License Job Shift: Days - 12 hr shifts ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES Prepares room, equipment and supplies needed for procedure, including anesthesia supplies. Opens sterile packs and supplies, using Surgeon's preference card for specific requests. A preoperative assessment is performed that includes the following surgical checklist: Introduces self, confirms patient identity using two patient identifiers. Verifies operative consent and correct procedure with patient. Confirms operative site marking if applicable. Verifies NPO status. Verifies history and physical is on chart. Verifies allergies. Confirms availability of special equipment and implants. Assesses patient for any additional patient specific needs. Brings patient to Operating Room suite and assists patient to the operating bed after braking of gurney. Positions patient for safe functional alignment, exposure of surgical site and to provide physical support. Assists Anesthesiologist with monitor leads, blood pressure cuff and oximeter placement and remain at patient's side during induction and positioning. Prepares patient's operative site, again confirming procedure with Surgeon's history and physical and operative consent. Performs a time out prior to incision. Directs overhead spotlights and connects equipment such as electrocautery, suction, and power equipment. Performs surgical counts, if required. Obtains any sterile supplies needed throughout procedure. Maintains an aseptic controlled environment. Maintains open communication with scrub tech assigned to the case. Follows proper procedures regarding exposure to Category 1 tasks. Follows proper procedures for handling hazardous waste material Documents information required on operative record and implant records. Maintains accurate documentation of charges. Properly handles surgical specimens and documentation of specimens. Informs front desk of progress and Post Anesthesia Care Unit, other facility unit and/or front desk prior to transfer out of OR. Assists with OR room turnover. Assists SPD with instrument reprocessing. Prepares soiled instruments for cleaning. Decontaminates and reprocesses in steam autoclave and or Steris system I. Puts unused sterile instruments and supplies away and notifies OR Team leader of damaged or malfunctioning equipment. Puts all other supplies away and leaves OR room tidy at the end of the day. Helps to stock the operating room, notifies team leader when supplies need to be reordered. Updates preference cards as necessary. Assists with pulling cases for the next day and setting up OR rooms. Does monthly cleaning, outdates, and helps to maintain the organization to the "back/sterile" hall. Helps to keep supplies in an orderly fashion, making them easy to locate and inventory. Assists with any other duties as deemed necessary. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas Current CPR and ACLS certification OR Experience preferred but not required. Demonstrates ability to stand and/or walk at least five hours per day. Demonstrates ability to lift and/or carry over 20 pounds on a regular basis. Demonstrates ability to push/pull over 25 pounds on a regular basis.
Responsibilities
The Registered Nurse prepares the operating room and assists with surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety and proper documentation. They also maintain communication with the surgical team and manage supplies and equipment.
