Description
Oracle Database Specialist As an Oracle Database Specialist, you will own the database workstream across a mission-critical legacy environment, leading workload and SQL performance analysis, locking and contention review, configuration assessment, and cross-layer diagnosis of stability and operability issues. You will bring deep expertise in Oracle 10g and legacy Oracle production environments to assess database behaviour, validate operational risks, and support evidence-based recommendations that are practical, reversible, and compatible with tightly coupled application dependencies. Experience in Oracle Forms-integrated database environments is essential, and broader familiarity with the application layer will be highly valuable in supporting cross-stack correlation. What You'll Do and How You'll Succeed Own the database workstream and lead database-layer assessment across performance, stability, resilience, and operability dimensions. Perform SQL workload characterisation to identify high-load patterns, inefficient execution behaviour, and performance-sensitive database activity. Conduct locking and contention analysis to uncover concurrency bottlenecks, blocking behaviour, and structural constraints affecting system responsiveness. Review index effectiveness, schema health, I/O bottlenecks, and database configuration posture to identify optimisation opportunities within current platform constraints. Assess application-to-database coupling points and work with the application-layer resource to correlate database findings with runtime behaviour and operational bottlenecks. Validate backup and recovery posture, including RMAN-based backup and restore considerations, operational readiness, and rollback feasibility. Review patching posture, change management practices, capacity monitoring, and uptime management across the Oracle database environment. Quantify technical debt related to performance, structure, security, operability, and maintainability within the database domain. Identify single points of failure, hidden coupling, database-related dependency risks, and constraints that may affect remediation sequencing or academic-cycle stability. Contribute to implementation-ready recommendations by linking database findings to risk level, dependency analysis, reversibility, rollback approach, and optimisation category. Ensure all findings are evidence-based, traceable, and suitable for technical validation by internal teams. We'd Love to Hear From You If... Experience You have at least 7 years of combined hands-on experience managing Oracle 10g or comparable legacy Oracle database environments in live production settings, or demonstrable equivalent enterprise assessment experience of similar scope and complexity. You have had direct operational ownership in production environments, not only advisory or review-only responsibilities. You have experience performing locking and contention analysis, SQL workload characterisation, RMAN-based backup and recovery validation, patch application and change management, and capacity monitoring and uptime management. You have worked in Oracle Forms-integrated database environments. Technical Expertise You have deep working knowledge of Oracle 10g in legacy enterprise production environments. You are strong in SQL workload analysis, locking and contention diagnostics, index review, schema health assessment, and I/O bottleneck analysis. You have solid experience with RMAN, backup and restore validation, patching, and database operational controls. You understand tightly coupled application-to-database environments involving Oracle Forms, Oracle Reports, and legacy enterprise applications. You are comfortable operating within environments constrained by legacy dependencies, compatibility requirements, and strict rollback or reversibility expectations. You can assess Oracle-specific dependencies such as PL/SQL objects, triggers, packages, stored procedures, proprietary SQL constructs, and compatibility-preserving upgrade or migration considerations where relevant. Familiarity with adjacent legacy environment considerations such as Java 1.4, Apache 1.3, CentOS 6, Red Hat 4, Struts, and CodeIgniter 1.0 will be useful when correlating broader operability and maintainability risks. Ways of Working You bring a disciplined, evidence-based approach to database assessment and optimisation analysis. You can communicate complex database behaviour clearly to application, infrastructure, and senior technical stakeholders. You focus on practical, compatible, and low-risk recommendations rather than theoretical redesign. You are comfortable working in legacy, mission-critical environments where operational continuity, academic-cycle sensitivity, and rollback clarity matter. You can operate as a top key resource with strong ownership, technical judgment, and cross-layer awareness.
Responsibilities
Lead the database workstream for a mission-critical legacy environment, focusing on SQL performance, stability, and operability. Perform deep-dive diagnostics into locking, contention, and application-to-database coupling to provide evidence-based optimization recommendations.
