Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Recovery Services the Organ Recovery Specialist is responsible for coordinating, assisting, and performing many of the key aspects related to the surgical recovery process of organ donation.

EDUCATION

  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related healthcare field required

EXPERIENCE

  • 1-3 years of operating room and/or patient care experience as a Surgical Technician, Surgical Assistant, Circulating Nurse or similar position required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with aseptic technique and sterile fields required
  • Ability to handle surgical instruments and organs/tissues safely required
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with others in challenging and stressful situations as well as conflict resolution skills required
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at one time while maintaining attention to detail required
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a professional and courteous demeanor required
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology, medications, disease processes and human anatomy required
  • Ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office and the internet for data entry and retrieval of information required
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and access to a vehicle required
Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates Core Values: Do Right Always, Find a Better Way, Make Results Happen and Strengthen the Team.
  • Serves as the primary contact person for operating room during donor cases, gives notification to operating room (OR) staff of pending cases, is available to respond to questions/concerns from the OR staff
  • Assists OR staff as needed with preparation for organ recovery
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with hospital and transplant center staff
  • Secures placement of all consented non-transplantable organs for research; independently recovers organs for research/education
  • Performs intra-operative organ preservation, and organ perfusion for kidneys
  • Coordinates transportation of recovered organs and tissues to recipient transplant centers or research facilities
  • Ensures all recovered organs and tissues are packaged with appropriate paperwork, blood, and tissue specimens per UNOS policy
  • Assists OR staff with post-mortem care
  • Completes all organ recovery and preservation related documentation accurately
  • Maintains organ recovery and preservation equipment and supply inventory
  • Maintains quality assurance and equipment maintenance records
  • Meets regulatory guidelines and requirements for data reporting of donor information
  • Assists Hospital Relations Specialists with educating health care professionals and the public regarding organ donation; may develop, conduct, and participate in education programs for health care professionals and the public.
  • Participates in the general orientation and training of newly hired OPO personnel
  • Participates in OPO and transplant department related research studies
  • Contributes to quality assurance activities
  • Supports and demonstrates a customer service commitment to internal and external customers through adherence to Versiti customer service standards and processes
  • Maintains competence through attendance at mandatory and other job-related educational opportunities
  • Actively participates in Lean and continuous improvement activities
  • Understands how applicable laws, regulations, standards, policies and procedures impact specific job responsibilities and functions and performs assigned job functions in accordance with them to include those set forth by the AOPO (Association of Organ Procurement Organizations) and UNOS.
